Subject: HELP on the 1980's

Written By: Jack on 3/26/2000 at 9:09 p.m.

If the 1970's are callede the "decade of disillusionment;" of increased government, advances in civil rights, increased influence of women's movement, a heightened concern for the environment, and increased space exploration. The 1990's was the decade of mass communication. What would the 1980's be????????

I think one of the most significant developments of the 1980s is the "personalization" of the computer. The decade began with the popularity of video games in arcades which led to the miniaturization of the games for home systems such as the Atari 2600. By the middle of the decade, Apple, Commodore and IBM had all created affordable units that allowed average Americans to perform more complicated tasks such as word processing in their own homes. Don't forget that up to this point, computers were primarily known as large, bookshelf-sized units that took up entire rooms of buildings.

The 80's have been called the "Me Decade" because of the inclination to spend far beyond one's means. I have also heard it said that people were very self absorbed during this period and were generally indifferent to the world around them (us). I grew up in the 80s and can say with no reservation that they were truely the best years of my life. It is true that people focused more on themselves, but it was impossible not to notice what was going on in the world around you (e.g. The Nuclear Threat). Many of the most popular songs of the day spoke out against the nuclear arms race, arguably much more in tune with the world than todays shallow musical messages. I'm older now, have a couple degrees under my belt and have joined the rat race but have never stopped wishing I was back "in the 80s". If it was the "Me Generation", I am proud to call it my generation. ...just my two cents

The 80s were the decade of junk bonds and greed. (Note cynicism.) They were also about Reaganomics and Thatcherism , privatization, the war on drugs, and crack cocaine. They included the end of Apartheid and the freeing of Nelson Mandela. They also saw the healthy growth of the charity rock concert. (Live Aid, Farm Aid etc...)

P.S. I would have called the 70s "The ME Decade", since 70s teens and young adults are the Me Generation.
