Subject: Rick Springfield/Beautiful Feelings

Written By: Kriste on 2/11/2000 at 3:36 p.m.

I consider myself a pretty hard core Rick Springfield fan, but was shocked and suprised to see that there is a release I DO NOT have. Can anyone tell me what 'Beautiful Feelings' is and how to get it? Also on this site there was mention on a song called, "Wait For Night" from 1982, what is that??? I remember a song called "Bruce" and the fantastic flip side called "Guenevere", were those maybe singles from "BF" and I missed it? Say it 'aint so!

Hey, another Springfield fan! :-) Seen him live four times now on his current "Karma" tour, and will be seeing him again a few more times in the coming months. In fact, I've met him in person twice in the last four months - very good to his fans! I highly recommend getting out and seeing his shows - he really does rock! I also have all of his U.S. album releases, including the two you're inquiring about...

"Wait For Night" was Rick's 1976 album on Chelsea Records; it was issued in all three formats (i.e., vinyl LP, cassette, & 8-track). It contains his moderate U.S. hit, "Take a Hand". Unfortunately for Rick, the label went under shortly after the album's release. But after making his big "comeback" in '81 w/ "Jessie's Girl" and the "Working Class Dog" album, his new label at the time, RCA, decided to ca$h in by obtaining the rights to the '76 "WFN" album, and re-issuing it in '82 on both vinyl LP & cassette. The '82 re-issues have a slightly different cover, and the vinyl LP also came w/ a free poster inside (the Chelsea originals did not include this poster). Unfortunately, "WFN" is now long out-of-print; the original '76 Chelsea pressings are fairly rare; the '82 re-issues on RCA are still somewhat easy to find, although they still command a premium. Even worse, to this day, "WFN" has never been re-issued on CD anywhere in the world... :-(

The "Beautiful Feelings" album was yet another example of a label attempting to ca$sh in on Rick's newfound success in the mid '80s. It was issued on Mercury Records in 1984, and came out on vinyl LP, cassette, and yes, CD as well (*very* unusual back in '84!). "BF" consisted of older recordings from the late '70s, as Rick was still signed to RCA in '84. And yes, "BF" is the album from which his moderate hit, "Bruce", came, and it also includes that single's flip side, "Guenevere". (So yes, you DID apparently miss it, LOL!) Unfortunately, "BF" is also long out-of-print in all formats. The vinyl LP is still fairly easy to find, and can be had fairly cheap (under $10). The cassette is a bit rarer, but also commands a slight premium since most folks no longer own turntables; expect to pay about $15-$20 for one on eBay. The CD, however, is quite hard to find, and therefore very much in demand; in fact, it's actually the rarest and most valuable Rick CD; expect to shell out $75-$100 whenever one turns up on eBay!

BTW, there are a *ton* of RS sites on the 'net, w/ pics of the above album covers, as well as complete track listings, etc. Happy hunting! :-)
