Subject: MTV2 playing entire video collection!
Just a heads up. MTV2 is playing ALL of MTVs video collection. It may be your last chance in a lifetime to record some rare vids you remember well.
DSS dishes carry MTV2 for those REALLY wanting a vid. Its by song title. it starts at 6 AM and goes to 6 PM. At 6 PM it repeats the last 12 hours.
Right now they are finishing songs starting with E so you are SOL on those, but there is another 3 months or so to catch anything with a title starting with F or higher. Yea, ya gotta wade through a large amount of crap but they are playing EVERYTHING. I got a couple real rare ones but am running under 50% of my want list due to the dern things coming on during week days from 12 to 6. I cant catch them during work and the brain clock shuts down at midnight and is complaining LOUDLY on weeknights after 11 pm.
For the record I dont work for MTV or a DSS dish maker and have no interest in either. Just a heads up for those who USED TO love MTV when they, GASP!, played vids.

Unfortunately, you've been suckered. While it's true MTV2 is currently playing a LOT of the older '80s videos that haven't been shown in ages, they aren't truly playing EVERY video that MTV originally aired back in the day (contrary to what they'd like you to believe!). I have most of MTV's original playlists from the '80s, and while I don't get MTV2 myself, I've already heard of at least a couple of videos that MTV originally aired in light rotation back in the early to mid '80s, but have been passed over in this current marathon. And for better or worse, I wouldn't be surprised if the one you want by the Planet P Project is omitted as well...

Quite possilbly true. I did get "coming up close" by Till Tuesday and it was FAR from a hit though IMHO her best work. It sure never got into heavy rotation. Well heres hoping for the planet P vid anyway. I seem to remember an acoustic version of "Dont pay the Ferryman" which was passed up. I got the production version which is the one I wanted anyway.
AHHHH remember those Friday nights staying up to watch Night Flight on USA. Radio 2000 or WWOR?

MTV's original playlists from the '80s, how would one go about getting a copy of this.

Short answer: Spend lots of time & money at your local public library!
"Billboard" magazine has always published the detailed weekly playlists of MTV (and most other video channels/programs) since the beginning, and still does to this day (although not in as much detail as they used to). Although not the case today, back in the '80s, those published playlists were submitted to the magazine by MTV itself. And while the rotation categories that MTV claimed each individual video was in wasn't always accurate, at least the lists were complete! (SAD FACT: Back in the mid '80s, MTV's weekly playlist averaged about 100 different current videos. Today, that figure is only about 40-50!)
As you may know, MTV was launched in August of '81. I myself have been buying "Billboard" since May of '83 (and have saved every issue!); therefore, I'm missing only those playlists from the first 21 months that MTV was on the air (late '81 - early '83), and have all the rest at my fingertips...
So if you live in or near a large city where the local public library has carried "Billboard" magazine for at least the last 20 years, you should be able to go there and photocopy the MTV playlists from each individual issue for about 10 or 15 cents a pop. Oh, and you'll probably have to make those photocopies from microfilm. Let's see, 52 weekly playlists a year x 8.5 years x $0.10 a pop means you should expect to invest at least $44 and quite a few evenings at the library, if you want the entire '80s! Sorry, but that's my best answer...

no thanks! I think I'll wait for those wonderful people at Record Research to do it for me someday >grin< actually.. if I did have access to it, I'd probably be psycho enough to go do it someday...
though to be honest, I'm way too busy sifting through lists of videos from the 90s trying to get the damn movies section done for the new site, so I've just about had my fill of grunt work lately..

Just for the record, I've been buying many of the Record Research books for about 12 years now, and I can tell you they will never be able to compile such a book of MTV's playlists (unless they cut some sort of deal w/ MTV, that is). That's because the playlist info was compiled by MTV itself, and merely submitted to "Billboard" on a weekly basis for publication in the magazine. In other words, that info was NOT compiled by "Billboard" itself, which is what Record Research currently has permission to use in its chart books...

you're probably right (unless Mtv gave away it's rights to the material when submitting it to Billboard, which is doubtful) which is a real shame, since it would probably be a real interesting read..
I'm currently giving some strong thought to buying the 70s and 90s Billboard charts from them, since I started the new sites.. but their current sale is nowhere near as cheap as the last time when I bought the 80s edition.. $70 is just too much (especially when you need two decades)
