Subject: were joy division and new order nazis?
I like both new order and joy division's music. But i would be sorely dissapointed to find out that they were nazis. because both band names correlate with nazi terms. it would suck if these great talents turned out to be predjiduce. please e mail me if you know.

I'm a big New Order fan and personally haven't heard a rumour like that. I have an older cousin who has been to a couple of their concerts in the 80's and told me that they have a significant Asian fan base. That still does not mean they don't have those views. Anyway, as a Asian-Indian, I too would be disappointed to hear that they are Nazis.

the explanation given to me (and on my New Order page) is as follows:
The band was named after The People's New Order of Kampuchea (or some such), and had little to do with Nazism, unlike a '70s band called "The New Order". Apparently, the manager was reading the newspaper while he and the remaining members of Joy Division were brainstorming new names. He came upon the name of a guerrilla group in Cambodia called the above name, The People's New Order of Kampuchea and apparently said, "How about 'New Order'?". The rest is history.
