Subject: MERLIN, HOW TO PLAY

Written By: Commie on 12/22/1999 at 12:26 a.m.

I have the red MERLIN game from late 70's or early 80's as shown on your website but we don't remember how to play, the back cover for batteries is missing which probably had directions. Put batteries in and goes on. Does anyone have instructions or remember how it works?

Ooh, I used to have that one, but that was ages ago. Early 80's all right.

Right, you have four grey buttons on the bottom half. Top left is to reset - if you want to play a different game; top right is to play the same game again, bottom left to take another 'card' in blackjack, and bottom right is the Merlin button.

RESET the game (top left, remember?), then press number 1 to 6 for a different game. If you have lost (or won), you can play the game again, with the top right button.

1) Tic Tac Toe. Try and get three in a row. Make a move by pressing a number, then let merlin pick one bye pressing the Merlin button. Note: if you manage to lose at this game, I can honestly say you have the IQ of a fish finger.

2) Music Maker. Press the numbers for the different notes, zero is a pause, then press 'Merlin' to hear what you composed.

Now my memory gets a little clouded. I might have confused game 3 with game 6.

3) Memory. I believe you first have to press a number, and this is the number of different lights in the sequence you have to remember. Press Merlin for the sequence, then repeat. He will show you how many mistakes you made.

4) My personal fav: Blackjack. Try to get as close to 13 as possible. Press BJ to take a card, press Merlin to stop. If you have over 13, you're busted. You start the game with 5 points. Each game won will add a point, each game lost will substract one. Try to reach 10.

5) Magic Square. I dunno, try to make a square (numbers 1,2,3,4,6,7,8,9) by pressing different numbers. Reminds me of a Rubik's puzzle.

6) Master Mind. Choose the number of numbers you want to guess first. Then punch in a sequence. Merlin will show you how many were right, but in the wrong place with a static light, and how many were right and in the right place with a flickering light.

Have fun!

Thanks to Hans on how to play Merlin. Your memory was great and Merlin now operational. Now I want the back plate. Any ideas?

As to your "back plate", the only thing I could think of is to check ebay and buy a complete merlin. They have a few there for auction, but if that's what you want to do, be prepared to pay at least $15.00 Good luck! :o)
