Subject: 90s bashing...

Written By: GoGoGirl52 on 12/1/1999 at 6:02 p.m.

I have just about had it with everyone putting the past ten years down! In particular I'm referring to this page I found called "Reasons why the 90s Suck..." I'm sorry, but the person who made it clearly has personal problems which make living in the present unpleasant! I'm sorry, but that bothers me to no end! In spring of 2000, I plan to have the very first pro-90's website up and running. In my opinion, every time period has their own little perps that make it unique; one is not better than the other, imho.

Peace, GGG52

I wish Peace was an appropraite word we could use in this violent decade of the 90s in which more people have died than any other decade in history due to violent crimes. When I was growing up as a child of the 70s and a teenager of the 80s I didnt have to worry about school shootings or going to work and being used as a firing squad. That stuff was reserved usually only for Postal Workers and became punchlines for jokes because it was always them that shot each other up, now nobody is safe and America is the problem and the cure if we could just learn how to respect and get along as Rodney King said earlier in this decade. I'll remember this decade for a few things, The LA Riots, the William Kennedy-Smith Rape Trial, the OJ Simpson Trial, the trial we just had regarding the gay student who was killed due to a hate crime. The decade started out with us losing Ryan White to Aids then shortly later Jim Henson then Sammy Davis Jr. and in 1991 we lost Freddy Mercury and recently lost INXS lead frontman Michael Hutchence to suicide. We have a President who lied under oath and cheated on his wife. People in America are homeless and unemployed like never before. And we still are a nation that protects our rights, which sadly has been abused by rioting in Seattle and the rampant usage of guns in America by our nations youth. Why is it that long ago I remember buying comic books and thinking it was neat that I could order a gun out of the magazine. I never wanted to kill a bird like Opie did by accident or shoot a person because I was disatisfied with my sex life, job, or grades just because I wanted to shoot target practice for fun. Why Canada & Mexico have no gun problems or the country who made us (England) use clubs to control crooks and thieves is beyond me. Call it a more humane way to police order perhaps, I dont know. I loved the 70s and for a large part loved the 80s, this decade has sucked excuse my french with its bad music and tv at least the internet has given us all something else better to do. I only hope and dont we all that the next decade will be a better place for all of us. And I enjoy life don't get me wrong, of course I would like to change things in my life for the better, but more importantly I would like for us all to change for the better. I could write a piece as long as this to list the positive aspects that this decade has brought us, but I'm sorry I need a little more time to think about it.

I think your passage is very well written and I agree with you on your points here. If there's one thing I really dislike about the 90's it's the music. Rap music (if you can call it music) is full of bad language and sex and is in no way melodic like the great songs of the 70's and 80's! And then we had singers like Mariah who try to copy songs by the Jackson 5...I don't think so!

I think the reason Canada has no gun problems is that guns are strictly controlled there, not like it is in the States, where the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees the right of every citizen to hold and bear arms—to keep a strong militia. And every time Congress tries to pass a gun bill, the National Rifle Association, that group of gun fanatics headed by Charlton Heston, tries to shoot it down. Guns are harder to come by legally ever since 1968, the year in which both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy (brother of John F., who was running for president at the time) were assassinated. Before that, you could buy a gun through the mail, no questions asked. The best-known gun control act in the States is called "the Brady bill" after Ronald Reagan's press secretary Jim Brady, who was severely wounded in the attempt on Reagan's life in 1981. I know guns are strictly controlled in Canada because crossing over the Ambassador Bridge from Detroit into Canada there is a sign saying "Handguns are prohibited in Canada."

it's amazing the public's perception of the US violence problem.. the media really blows things out of proportion. Violence of all types are at the lowest since the early 1960s. The biggest problem is that the media overcovers events like Columbine which helps inspire these lone nutballs that exist everywhere.. before Columbine, there was a smaller shooting in a few other schools, and you know that these kids saw the attention gained from that and sought to imitate it.

While I agree they sought to imitate it there is something wrong with this picture. Imitate killing one another is out of hand. I cant agree with your thoughts on violence being lower though through my experience working in law enforcement. The rapes, suicides, murders are much higher than ever before. Of course the media reports it and fills our lives with nothing but depressing images but the camera does not lie. I cant tell you the number of people who say back in the 50s and 60s who felt so safe that they never locked their doors, how many people can say that now? My goodness I have trouble sleeping at night because I am awaken at the sound of car alarms honking every 20 minutes in the city. I DO NOT remember that 5, even 10 years ago. And the Canada situation regarding guns has been addressed thus far, why our neighbors to the south, Mexico doesnt have a gun problem either hasn't. Yes they have a drug problem, but so does everywhere else. Alcoholism kills more than drugs have and that fact has never changed over the years. We had Prohibition and people risked their lives just to get booze and I'm sad to say it would be worse these days. I know you cant take guns out of the hands of every citizen due to many reasons, the Brady Bill has failed miserably and egomaniac actors like Charlton Heston think their manhood is threatened if they cant buy a gun at KMart or Target. Too bad! He still thinks he is God anyways! I'm sorry if the discussions have been depressing as of late and I'm mostly to blame for that. No generation is better than the other, I mean one of us will be running the country in 15 years, less or more. We cant be all that bad. It just comes down to likes and dislikes when it comes to decade vs. decade, just like our options when getting ice cream at Baskin- Robbins. I like the fact we have a freedom of choice, which is our greatest asset in America in my opinion. If we ever lose that, then we are in severe trouble.
