Subject: Unknown 80's American Pop/rock group
I was given a tape to record some stuff for a friend. The tape was already recorded on, and I liked what it was. It was a female lead band that his cousin in the US had sent him in the mid 80's. No song title, no artist name. There was a cover of the Troggs "with a girl like you" re-titled "with a boy like you" and slightly changed lyrics to allow for the fact that a girl was singing it. The only other track that is really describable is one that had clips of StarTrek embedded, that I guess was called "Good Guys only win in Movies". At least, that was the main part of the chorus. The main ST clip was Jim Kirk saying "Computerised halfbreed" and Spock saying "My mother was a teacher". I would really like to know what that stuff was!!!!

It's possible that the band you are referring to is Face to Face. Face to Face were from the Boston area and were around in the mid-80s. They had a female lead singer, Laurie Sargent.
You'll need to look into this further, though.
A search on the web for "Good Guys Only win in Movies" turned up an artist named C.C. Catch. She was around in the mid 80s - however, she was from overseas and I think she was more dance than rock. A search of her album tracks does not indicate any song called "A Boy Like You" (or "A Girl Like You", for that matter). There is also a song that I found on the AllMusic Guide called "Good Guys Only win in the Movies" (note that the title differs with the addition of the word "the") by soul singers Mel and Tim, which came out well before the mid 80s.
Since C.C. Catch didn't have the Troggs cover on any of her albums, I searched the AllMusic Guide for "A Boy Like You." I didn't find that exactly, but "Boy Like You" came up as an track on Face to Face's 1985 album "Confrontation." This was the closest thing I could find title-wise. I couln't determine if this was a cover of the song by the Troggs, as no author information was available for the song.
Face to Face might be the band in question. They were American, were rock/late New Wave, and had a female lead singer. C.C. Catch was a Dutch-born German artist who (I think, but I can't say for sure) was more dance pop. Mel and Tim were a male duo.
I don't have anything by Face to Face, so I can't really say much else. (BTW Face to Face had a minor hit in 1985 with a song called "10-9-8" which got some radio and MTV airplay.)
If you go in search of Face to Face, be forewarned: there is a new "punk" band out there with the same name. Since the 80s Face to Face stuff is (I believe) out of print, most searches will pull up the 90s band of the same name.
Could you post some more possible song titles? Perhaps some unique refrains or lines that can be searched on?
This is a very interesting question. I'm curious to find out who is really on this tape of yours.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the search so far, the titles of the tracks, as I guessed them are:- Sentimental Lover, Echoing Heart, Bad Dreams, In the Night, La Isla Bonita (Yes Madonna's one), Le Amour, Be my love tonight (cover?), Can I dance with a boy like you (Troggs Cover), Diga Diga Dango, Clap your hands, Good Guys only win in movies, Like a hurricane, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Are you man enough (Cover?), Don't don't don't be a hero tonight, Sole Survivor, Midnight Gambler, Don't Wait too long.
The ones I've put as possible cover versions stand out as being obviously better music than the others. The track titles usually seem to suggest themselves, but as a last resort they are the lyrics that are most repeated!

Thanks for the additional song titles. From this info, I can tell you that the artist is C.C. Catch.
Just what album it is, I'm not sure. I'll get back to you on that.
