Subject: Help me find this Artist/Title
In 1988 or 1989 I was fortunate enough to tape a song that I only heard on the radio that one time, and I can't find any information about it... also the DJ annoyingly didn't say the artist or title. The singer is male, and the song starts with "Hey Toni, I'm waiting for you" sung a couple of times. The chorus goes: "Hey Toni, you're so fine/ You've got me going out of my mind/ The things you do are so unique/ Hey Toni, come dance with me to my beat."
I have been searching for info on this song for a long time... Can anyone help me with the artist and/or title?
Thank you much!

Although I do not have this song in my vast personal collection of '80s music, nor do I recall ever hearing it, based on some research, I'm 95% certain I have a positive i.d. for you, thanks to the sufficient info you provided. I'm pretty sure your song is "Hey Ton'i" [sic] by Kirby Coleman, a minor hit on the r&b charts in the Winter of '89 (it failed to cross over to the pop charts). "Hey Ton'i" would prove to be his only hit, making him a "one-hit wonder". It was actually released in November or December of '88, so this matches your date perfectly, and yes, he was a male vocalist. And since "Hey Ton'i" failed to really take off, this would also explain why you ended up hearing the song on the radio only once...
BTW, Coleman was also an actor & dancer, and you may recall seeing his appearances in the movies "Death Wish" (1974) and "Inside Moves" (1980). He is from New Orleans...
Unfortunately, "Hey Ton'i" was just a one-off single; i.e., there was no full-length album released by Coleman on which the song appears. And to make matters worse, the song was commercially released in only *one* format, that being as a 12" vinyl single, which contained five different mixes of "Hey Ton'i". (It was on the r&b/rap label Next Plateau, best known for bringing us the female trio Salt-n-Pepa.) So the song does *not* exist on a vinyl 45, cassette single, or CD single! There's a very slim chance a promo CD single was issued for "Hey Ton'i", but so far, I've yet to find any proof of its possible existence in my various CD books/catalogs, or the fairly reliable internet sources I use. (However, one of my books does show it as being released as a commercial CD single on the Intercord label over in Germany, so if you must have it on CD, this may prove to be the only way to get the song in that format!) I did some checking, and the original U.S. 12" single of "Hey Ton'i" does appear to be available for $10 or less from quite a few music dealers on the internet. Hope this helps...
