Does anyone remember when Hands Across America was and what it was for? And....did it work?

"Hand Across America", sung by the 'Voices of America', was on May 25, 1986. I've got the 45 here in front of me...here's what the jacket notes say:
"On Sunday, May 25, 1986, 8 million Americans will join hands fromLos Angeles to New York to take a stand against hunger and homelessness in America."
It was a project of USA for Africa, and ran through at least 25 major US cities. As I recall, they got a fair turnout, but not the unbroken human chain they'd been hoping for.
Hope this helps! :)

The Ramones did a funny parody of "Hands Across America" for there "Something to Believe in Video." The setting was "RAMONES AID" and the cause was called "Hands Across Your Face" and the logo looked just like the "Hands Across America" logo, only it had people standing in front of a face, instead of the map of the USA. The video had cameos from a lot of people: Ted Nugent, Zander Schloss, Fishbone, Mary Waranov, John Doe and Exene Chervenka, as well as people made up to look like the people in the USA for Africa video (Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper look-alikes.)
They did this because of all the "______-Aid" projects that popped up at that time. Some of them seemed more like an opportunity to make an all-star record and very little about actually helping people.
