Subject: This years' college freshmen were born in 1981

Written By: Kathy, St. Paul, MN on 9/2/1999 at 6:35 p.m.

I just heard on the radio that the average incoming college freshman was born in 1981. Now that makes me feel old. John Lennon and John Belushi have always been dead, to them. They don't remember real roller skates. The Simpsons has been on for over half of their lives. Do you feel sorry for them, or envy them?

Why, this is me. (I've just started college last week.) Yeah, ... I've always enjoyed pity for being unable to control my birth year ;)

Anyways, I certainly remember *real* roller skates; my first were such a pair! John Lennon and John Belushi have always been 'dead' (ah, yes, but not in spirit ;) ) to me because they *were* gone either before my birth or almost right after (Belushi.) Sad as it is we weren't there to enjoy the presence of such people on this planet, we still know and remember who they are. The Simpsons being on for over half my life... Well, when I'm thirty and the Simpsons' television running has long expired you certainly cannot say that they've been on for half my life anymore :) It wouldn't work anymore.

Just this freshman's perspective... I would think that, in about another decade or so, '80s children (of birth in the '80s) should fondly reminisce of old times and say to themselves about the freshmen in 2009: "Gee... These kids never knew the magic of Balki Bartokomous."

Well I cannot really say....I was born in 1977, not very far off from this group...in fact some of them were freshmen while i was in highschool...I grew up with alot of them. But I much more envy you because i Would have loved to have lved in the 70's and the early 80's!!!! I loved the whole scene...The love and the great music. Anyway they did have roller skates in the late 1980's...I remember them.

I was born in '81 and i remeber roller skates! I was skating in '86. Too bad you didn't get to grow up with all the great 80's toys! Ah, it was such a joy being a child in the 80's...you sure did miss out.

They WERE born before the '80s, so they got to enjoy '80s toys too.
