My God! Can't believe somebody else actually remembers this one! Your song is "Murphy's Law" by the group Cheri. They were a black female duo from Canada. "Murphy's Law" was considered a novelty hit, w/ elf-like backing vocals. The chorus went as follows: "(Got it all together, don'tcha baby?)/Murphy's La-a-aw/Sure out to getcha/(Got it all together, don'tcha baby?)/Murphy's La-a-aw/Sure out to getcha...".

The single barely scraped into the Top 40 on the pop charts here in the U.S. in the Spring of '82-yes, at the exact same time that Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder were sitting at #1 w/ "Ebony and Ivory". (Good memory!) In fact, I remember "Murphy's Law" was a moderate hit on the radio in SoCal, where I lived at the time. (Looks like you're in Fresno, LOL!) While Cheri proved to be "one-hit wonders" on the pop charts, "Murphy's Law" actually made top 5 r&b, and the duo would later score a few more r&b hits in 1982-83.

Unfortunately, "Murphy's Law" is one of those great lost songs of the '80s. :-( I doubt more than 100 people even remember this one! It was off of Cheri's 1982 debut album, also titled "Murphy's Law". However, it was on a tiny independent label, so very few copies were pressed back in '82. Of course, the album's long out-of-print, making it quite rare-you'll have one heck of a time finding either the vinyl LP or 45! I myself have been trying to find that album on cassette for over a decade now. (Have the cassette of Cheri's second [and final] album from '83, titled "Love Stew".) And the album's never been re-issued on CD anywhere in the world. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, the song itself has never even appeared on CD; not even on any CD compilations of '80s music, although there's a slight chance I could be wrong on this one. However, I myself am lucky enough to have the song on one of those infamous K-tel compilations of the early '80s (which were issued only on LP, cassette, and 8-track, LOL!). I even went so far as to pull out my K-tel cassette and listen to "Murphy's Law" just before typing this up (thank God for K-tel, LOL!). It was indeed a fun song... :-)
