Subject: Somebody kill me from "The Wedding Singer&quo
When Adam Sandler said that when he wrote the song "Somebody kill me", he said that he was listening to The Cure a lot. Is this song patterned after one of The Cure's songs? I know I've heard something like it before. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

The style was very Cure-like...dark, cathartic, emotional. I doubt it was patterned on one particular song, but on their style at the time. Check out the "Boys Don't Cry" Album for similar songs.

I have to say at first I was inclined to agree that Adam's song was simply very Cure-like... but not actually patterned after a Cure song.
Upon further thought... I think it WAS patterned after a particular song, though. It's a stretch... but what about "The Kiss" from 'Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me'- a classic 80's Cure album (for those who aren't into them). Here's a reprint of the lyrics courtesy of the Official Cure WebPage at:
----------------------------------
The Kiss
Kiss me kiss me kiss me! Your tongue is like poison So swollen it fills up my mouth
Love me love me love me! You nail me to the floor And push my guts all inside out
Get it out get it out get it out! Get your #####ing voice
Out of my head!
I never wanted this I never wanted any of this I wish you were dead I wish you were dead
I never wanted any of this I wish you were dead
Dead
Dead
Dead

If that's not REALLY close to Adam's song I don't know what is!
Hope that wasn't too far to reach... Brian

No, but Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me came out in 1987, and the movie takes place in August '85. It could be one of the small details that was not chronologically correct, or maybe Adam's character became Robert's writing partner? :-)

Hmmm... you're very observant, Sarah! :) I never recalled that the movie took place in '85. Even if I had I would have SWORN that "Kiss Me^3" was earlier than '87. I graduated in '88 and I remember being way into the Cure (and esp. that album) after my first "real" love sent me a tape of them.
And then... one day she stopped calling me and... :sniffle:... I had my first devastating broken heart. Of course the Cure's always good at taking someone who's already depressed and making them virtually suicidal with grief. :) Thank God they hadn't released "Disintegration" yet. Ugh!
But back to the topic- Adam's song. The first thing I thought of was "The Kiss" but I guess it was either an anachronistic reference or Adam just wrote something depressing, dark, and a bit violent just as the Cure often do.
Thanks for setting me straight Sarah! Brian
Oh yeah and to Mariel (the girl I was in love with)... you changed me forever and I'll always love you. (I think I'm going to go listen to "Pictures Of You" and cry in a dark corner somewhere.)
