Subject: Hall & Oates: Kiss on My List is TOO a love so
I've heard Daryl Hall & John Oates with this crap about Kiss on My List being an "anti-love" song before. Being a big fan of that particular tune, I must protest.
I don't know what those boys are on or if they're just senile, but if you listen to the lyrics, there doesn't seem to be much doubt that this person is at least smitten, if not obsessed.
"My friends wonder why I call you all the time, what can I say I don't feel the need to give such secrets away You think maybe I need help, though I know I'm right alright I'm just better off not listening to friends' advice When they insist on knowing my bliss I tell them this When they wanna know what the reason is I only smile when I lie then I tell them why Because your kiss..."
Now I admit, the part about "when I lie" perhaps suggests that the speaker really has some hidden agenda, but Mr.Oates' lame explanation that it's not a love song because the kiss on only "on the list" of the best things instead of being THE best thing sound like, well, bunk.
Somebody PLEASE explain this to me. Is this song about someone defending himself against critics who say he's too much in love? Even this seems to be a shaky analysis, but I can't imagine why else those two would insist that the song is something it's not, unless they're just embarassed by writing a super-sweet tune with no "edge" to it.

well you know what, it's not the first time the fans interpret a song differently than the author originally intended.. they're not senile, the quote I have with Daryl stating this is from when the song went to number one, not like last week or something.. so I doubt they were embarrased about it or anything.. it's actually alot like the 10cc song "I'm not in Love" which is also confused as being a love song quite often

Yes, i'm well aware that people can interpret art differently from the author's 'intention.'
What I was hoping for was an analytical explanation of the lyrics of the song which might help me to UNDERSTAND this interpretation, because frankly, I just don't see it. I don't know the 10cc song to which you refer, so that doesn't help. I am familiar with a song like "Every Breath You Take" which lots of teenyboppers thought was a really romantic love song, but which actually was more about obsession and stalking. So, you see, I do get the concept. Does anyone who's familiar with the lyrics to this song have any help for me? I'm a temp and I'm incredibly bored here at work, which is why I have lots of time to waste on such minutia...
