Subject: Misheard Lyrics - 70's

Written By: Gordon Alexander on 7/6/1999 at 9:56 p.m.

Re: Steve Miller - The Joker.

The misheard lyric has had us (myself, my wife and a few friends who regularly listen to that CD) mystified for years. The correct lyric as listed agrees with what we believe it to be, but what is the "pompotous" of love. We've looked it up in the Pocket Oxford dictionary, and can't find a thing. Can you help?

Most definitely this was a made up word. There was a movie out a few years back called The Pompatus Of Love - from the line in the Steve Miller song. It is a nonsense word.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I once knew a DJ at 96 Rock in Atlanta who said that Steve Miller made up the word "pompotous". Who knows. It's as good a guess as any.

I always thought it was something along the lines of pompodour, a hair style from the 50s, but I think you're right.. I think he just made it up to fit the song..
