According to Hershey's website, the Whatchamacallit first appeared in 1978. This sounds about right to me because I can remember buying them in Junior High, and that would have been the right time frame. I don't know about the copyright information.

I was gonna guess '79, I remember seeing the "NEW" candy bar in 5th grade, so that woulda been fall '79. But just 'cuz it's "new" in Zanesville, Ohio doesn't mean it hasn't been out for a year or more. >;-P
Had one just a few months ago. Either I had an old one, or they "don't make 'em like they use to." Hard and bland under the chocalate. I loved those growing up.

I had one a few weeks ago and I couldn't tell any difference in the taste, so maybe you got ahold of one that had been on the back of the shelf for 6 months.
I was also fond of them when I was younger, but my all time favorite was the Marathon bar... long braided soft caramel covered in chocolate... sigh... but Mars stopped making them in the early 80s for some reason. I don't eat much candy these days, but when I do it's usually Snickers or Zero, maybe a Zagnut thrown in from time to time.
