Yes, it is true. USA beat Russia in the 1980 winter Olympics. Even though I am Swedish, i must say it was a great match.

Go to Google or any other search engine and enter the phrase "miracle on ice". That should get you all the info you need.
Subject: Re: so-called "miracle" on ice
yeah, that's right, the USA beat the Soviet Union in the 1980 Olympic ice hockey tournament, setting off what had to be the most unbearable, gratuitous display of US flag waving ever seen. Al Michael's "do you believe in miracles?" call at the end of the game has to be the most pretentious call in the history of sports commentary. The way people in the States reacted, it was like they thought winning the gold was the result of divine intervention, and that beating the USSR in that game alone proved that the USA was God's chosen country, or something along those lines.
If you mention the "miracle" on ice to most people in Canada, they'll probably look back in irritation at all the pretentious flag waving and ticker tape parades(I'm from Canada, by the way). It's easily the most overrated achievement in the history of sports.
There's actually quite a few people who think that the USA winning that game was the greatest moment in the history of sports. I've seen it at the top of lists for all time greatest sporting moments, which is totally laughable. It doesn't even come close to, say, Brazil winning the 1970 soccer World Cup, Muhammed Ali recapturing the world title, or Jesse Owens' outstanding performances at the 1936 Olympic games in Nazi Germany. It was just a fluke result in a hockey game.

Wrong, Satish. That would be when the US women's soccer team won whatever they won a couple years ago. That was overkill to the max.

I wouldn't say that. The American team was given no chance in hell to beat the Soviets; they were professionals, while our team was comprised of collegians. Add to that the tie with Sweden in the first round, and the comeback win against the Germans, and you get quite a story. What is often lost in all the hype though, is the fact that the win over the Soviets wasn't for the gold medal - that came in the win over Finland.

From an American viewpoint, certainly it is among the greatest moments in sports. THE greatest? No, I wouldn't say so, but I'm not sure just where I'd rank it. That's something each individual has to judge for themselves. Personally, I'd put the NY Rangers winning the Stanley Cup after a 54 year drought ahead of the "miracle on ice", probably Nolan Ryan's 7th career no-hitter as well.

Well said Wicked Lester, this person is obviously NOT American! Maybe just trying to start trouble.
