I saw an 80's sci-fi movie on TV years ago and I've never seen it since. It was about an alien that could possess people,and towards the end it possessed a senator.

The basic plot sounds like either The Hidden (theatrical release starring a pre-Twin Peaks Kyle MacLachlin) or a television movie that turned into a short lived series called Something is Out There, which starred Maryam d'Abo and Joe Cortese.
