Subject: OK, here's another question for everyone

Written By: BoyOfCorn on 4/20/2001 at 5:17 p.m.

Here's my question:

Have you ever met a celebrity? Getting an autograph and having a picture taken with them counts.

If you have met one, who was it, and when??

I've met Weird Al three times on his last tour. I won a contest to meet him the first time I met him at his concert at Six Flags in St. Louis. It was awesome, because I got to bring my friend with me backstage, and we each got 2 t-shirts and an 8x10 glossy pic of him.

Another celebrity I've met, if you can call him a celebrity, was "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash, wrestler of WCW. I met him at the Atlanta airport. I was on my way back to St. Louis from my vacation down in Key West a couple of years ago. I got my pic taken with him too.

1) I met Moby at an autograph signing in 1995. He was playing at a club in Chapel Hill NC that evening. I brought my "Feeling So Real (Remixes)" 12-inch single jacket for him to sign. I had the beats per minute of the tracks on the record labeled so we talked about DJing & stuff. He drew his little bug-eyed caricature on the jacket. 2 years later my wife found a kitten she wanted to keep and when we got him his eyes were bigger than the rest of his body and it reminded me of the caricature Moby drew so the cat is named after him.

2) In April 1997 on a flight from Charlotte NC to Los Angeles I met George Clinton of the P.Funk Allstars. His band was playing at USC that evening. I had some week-long convention (AORN? was with my previous employer) and got his autograph for the Five-O (which at the time played a heavy dose of funk & soul and George was always in the playlists). The only thing I had for him to sign was a sheet of paper from my planner. Still posted in the Five-O's office.

Sport celebrities I got autographs are:

Mohammad Ali at a hotel in 1994
Sandy Koufax at a hotel in 1995
Magic Johnson at basketball game in 1996
Kareem Abdul Jabbar at a mall in 1995
Danny Manning at a basketball game in 1994
Joe Namath at a hotel in 1994
Shaquille O'Neal at a mall in 2000

By far the coolest person on this list goes to Joe Namath. Very friendly towards all the people who sought his autograph.

Lets see, Ted Nugent, and Rue McClanahan (from Golden Girls) have both shopped in the store that I work in. Nugent is actually kind of a regular. And McClanahan is really nice, she kept asking me questions about pears!

Okay, people I waited on at a movie theatre:

Uh, that Blossom girl. She was really obnoxious.
Newman from Seinfeld.
Julie Brown (the short white one)

I talked briefly with two actors I was really happy to meet, but their names may not mean much to a lot of people: Bruce Davison and Robert Picardo.

Ray Wise, who was Laura Palmer's dad on Twin Peaks smiled and waved at me when he noticed my jaw drop. I'm a very big TP fan.

And...

David Cassidy shook my hand during a performance of EFX in Las Vegas.

I stood in line at a record store behind the lead singer of The Romantics.

I once saw Joe Mantegna in a drugstore.

Met Bruce Campbell at a premiere of Evil Dead II.

Met N'Bushe Wright at a screening of Zebrahead.

Said Hi to Deborah Foreman because she looked familiar, but for an hour or so I thought she had been someone I went to school with or something. Someone clued me in later on.

William ("This is Bill Shatner") Shatner called me in 1987. Absolutely true, but way too complicated to explain.

Most important to me, however, was meeting the absolutely amazing Betty Buckley after a concert last year. Most of you 80's kids will just remember her as Abby on Eight Is Enough or maybe the gym teacher from Carrie. But she was always first and foremost a stage singer/actress.

Seems like I'm missing some, but since most of them are rather odd occurrences, its hard to recall them all.

4yrs ago, about a month after our daughter was born, me & the wife took our 6yr old son on a vacation. Went flew from Phoenix to LA (Disneyland). On the way back, while waiting in the LA airport, we notice Davey Jones siting near us. He was very polite and gave us an autograph, even though he seemed to be having a bad day. He signed the card (he got a business card with his picture on it from his briefcase) to our daughter, Marissa. We promised that she, like Mom & Dad, would be a Monkees fan.

He ended up on our flight to Phoenix. My in-laws had the baby when they met us at the gate. We were telling them about meeting Davey when we hear, "Hello, Marissa" as Davey walked by. Very cool guy.

Other than that, I've met & gotten autographs from several Az Cardinals players.(and partied with a few)

My brother and me were very competive runners in high school. We ran in a Forth of July 5K race just outside of Rockford, IL in 1983. During the race, there was a torrential downpour and the race volunteers abandoned their positions as course directors, my brother and me were leading the race by over a quarter mile when a spectator told us to turn down the wrong street, and we ended up running about an extra 1/3 of a mile. The winner of the race, Rick Neilson of Cheap Trick would not even concede the race to us even though we blew him away. Somewhere I have a picture of all of us on an awards platform for the first 3 finishers.

Also, back in 1999, I saw John Waite perform at a small club in Chicago. It was a great performance, and I got to speak with him briefly and got his autograph aterward at a fan "meet and greet."
