Subject: girls shoes of the late '80s

Written By: jolly dodger on 4/18/2001 at 1:54 p.m.

Back in 1986/87, when I was going secondary school, there was this particular type of shoe that a lot of English school leaver girls wore that was a pointed-flatty with just a strap around the heal. These shoes were made of a thin leather and had patterns around the top of the shoe and I thought ( and still do ) that they were the sexiest footwear a 15+year schoolgirl could wear but if anyone out there can supply me with some more information on this subject I would be very grateful.

With that description, they sound like "sling backs". You can still buy them around here, I have a white pair.

Yes but I always thought that slingbacks were women's shoes that had a half-heel, the shoes that I am trying to describe were completely flat, very flexible and the shape of the girl's feet made the look of the shoe so unique, because they were made of thin leather material. They seemed quite popular with only a few 15 year-old schoolgirls who usually wore them in the midsummer. The shoes in question went quite well with long skirts and denim jackets of which I remember a few of the sexbomb senoir schoolgirls would wear back in that decade.

p.s, I also remember one fifth-year student who had a nice air of pastel blue shoes. Her name was Michelle.

Well the ones I have are flats and white leather (very soft). Very comfortable! I wonder if we're talking about the same shoes?

Well April, I think you've convinced me that you DO own a pair of those beautiful feminine shoes that I used to love the fifth-year schoolbabes used to wear. Yeah, I bet they're really comfortable because as I remember those shoes were very flexible and one particular girl whose name was Tracey ( I had bit of a secret crush on her at the time, she was a bit of a stunner at the time ) she always wore a white pair during the summer time!
I remember Tracey having a size 6/7 shoe size so I remember her feet kind of shaped the look of the shoe and that's why I always found them so sexy, these shoes looked gorgeous only on girls who took a size 6/7 shoe and had nicely-shaped feet.
April are you American? I can understand why you own a pair because they are no longer available in the United Kingdom unless sometime in the future they become revived by some female fashion guru.....

Jolly, I am in the USA. I tried to find a picture on the net of these shoes, but found something pretty close to what I'm talking about on Ebay. Click the link below and see if it's close to what you're thinking of. The ones I have are soft white leather, with a "cut out" design on the top and part of the straps.

Yes April, that's an excellent example of the style of shoe that the schoolbabes I used to see would wear during the summertime. I think shoes like those are very comfortable and very healthy for young women to wear ( I hate to see girls wear high-heeled boots or shoes ) and I wish that they were still available for young ladies in this country but they were always very popular in England during the late-1980's, as I've mentioned so many times before.
You said that you owned a pair of these white slingbacks with a cut-out pattern design on top of the toe area of the shoe and part of the straps.....well I think your description is nearly identical to the shoes that the girl who wore them at school wore.
Thanks for the picture April, very kind!
