Subject: Info on the 80's

Written By: Jessika on 4/11/2001 at 3:51 p.m.

Hi. I am doing a report on te 80's. I was asked to centralize a theme for the 80's. As far as I see, it seems a decade of outspokeness. Sexuality seemed to be rising, gayness was becoming more popular, the clothes and music was wild, but I would really appreciate any insight you might have for me. Does this seem like a good theme to you? Thank you for your time.

If you really want to know the mind set of teens in the '80's, I'd recommend you watch the movie River's Edge. It's about a school kid that kills his girlfriend, and all their other friends really don't have any emotion about it at all. They just try and help the guy evade the cops, and get rid of the girls body like it's no big deal. I guess they even show this movie in some college psych classes. it stars a then unknown Keanu Reeves, but the main star is Crispin Glover, he has to be seen to be believed! It came out in 1986, but was just re-released on DVD.

You're right, Britton; River's Edge is a classic movie that demonstrates the angst and general apathy of growing up during the 80s. My 80s reality, however, was nothing like that movie, thank God. My take on this topic is that, for centuries, children were seen and not heard. It wasn't until after WWII that the youth culture actually had a voice in the world. This continued thru the sedate 50s, the chaotic 60s and the laidback 70s, but it wasn't until the "anything goes" 80s rolled around that the youth culture had something a bit more powerful to bargain with: MONEY. 80s kids had their allowance money to purchase those Atari video games and the one hundred dollar Nike sneakers. Youth culture had finally found its voice (everybody knows that money talks, and the media listened loud and clear.) Out of this, rose the phenomenon of the Valley Girl, who was basically a self-centered, compulsive shopper with her Daddy's credit card. I don't agree with the concept that no one cared during the 80s: just review the Live Aid concert for world hunger, USA for Africa, Farm Aid, Hands Across America, United Artists Against Apartheid, et. al. Do you think that any of today's musical artists would band together for a concert such as Live Aid, to raise money for famine relief? Highly unlikely. Also, by the time the 80s came about, the Sexual Revolution of the 60s and 70s had already passed, and sexuality and the media went together hand and hand. The specter of Aids had reared its ugly head, and children growing up during this time were taught that unsafe sex = death. As far as politics go, Ronald Reagan did make the world seem like a safer place by sugar-coating everything. The "Don't Worry, Be Happy" philosophy was the standard political retort. In summary, while growing up during the 80s, I felt happy and content, but I guess they say that ignorance is bliss...
