Subject: Are You A Bangles Fan?

Written By: Ex-Fan on 4/10/2001 at 6:51 p.m.

I used to be a Bangles fan,but not anymore. Why do I now dislike them? Visit www.rockforlife.org and click on the second news article (the one beginning with "Current rockers..."). Learn the truth.

I like The Bangles and I respect them for supporting what they believe in. The article was silly and made me laugh because of its attitude toward them and the other artists supporting their cause. Helps me feel superior.

Rock On Bangles!!!

...I don't know what to think of the artists themselves. Usually, I separate the artist from the art which they produce. Having said that, I still like the music of the Bangles just as much as I like the music of Elton John and John Lennon, the films of Woody Allen and Elia Kazan, the poetry of Ezra Pound, and the writings of Yukio Mishima. I may not agree with their personal philosophies and life choices, but I'm not my brother's keeper...

But we are our brother's keeper. And you can't seperate the artist from the art. If you personally don't believe in something - we'll use abortion since it was already brought up - and you find out that a favorite performer does believe in and support it, then by continuing to buy his or her work you are by default supporting the very thing you disagree with. You buy a Bangles album some of that money could end up going to aid the cause of abortion.

By that same rationale, if you pay taxes and support this country you are fueling wars in other countries...Nothing is black and white.

But, Tarzan Boy, we don't have any choice in paying our taxes

"The only sure thing in this life is death and taxes" - sigh. If I took an existentialist (how passe) approach to it, though, paying taxes would be a choice - it's just a matter of whether one could deal (or is ready to deal) with the consequences. On the same note, I remember an anecdote about Henry David Thoreau ("Civil Disobedience" anyone?) and how he didn't pay taxes because he believed the Mexican-American War was a disgrace - he was jailed for it too (his philosopher friend, Emerson, visited him and asked Thoreau why he was there to which he replied: "why aren't YOU here with me?" and such).

I think I'm going to feel the brunt of the whole messageboard weigh down upon me for saying all this (what a troublemaker I am :P), so I better just shut up...
