Subject: Smokey Robinson and a song question...

Written By: Andrew on 2/26/2001 at 1:59 p.m.

Hi, I have two questions. First off, can anyone tell me the year that Smokey Robinson did "Cruisin"? It's supposed to be from the 80's but it sounds older. My second question is the name of a song. I think it may be a 70's song, but in the chorus the band sounds like they keep singing: "Ballroom blitz, ballroom blitz, ballroom blitz...". I know it was a big hit. Anyway, if you can help me out, that'd be great, thanks.

"Crusin'" was a hit in 1979. I thought it sounded mellow against the other hits of the time, but not older than it was. The song of his that really does sound out of date was "Tears Of A Clown" - although it went to #1 in 1970, it was recorded years earlier but not released as a single.
Sweet did "Ballroom Blitz" - slang term for slam dancing. I believe some European heavy metal band like Krokus redid the song in the 80's. The original still rocks though - doesn't get the airplay it deserves as an oldie/classic rocker.

Not to nitpick, but the record books technically consider "Cruisin'" to be a 1980 hit, since it didn't actually *peak* on the pop charts until February of that year. (Joel Whitburn's "Pop Annual" book is a great one to have, BTW!) I remember the timing of that song well, as I'd just moved to SoCal in January of '80. Agreed on "Tears of a Clown"...

Yeah, it was Krokus who covered Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz", on their 1984 album, "The Blitz". The Sweet were one of the best bands of the '70s, IMO. Their 1973 s/t debut (w/ "Little Willy") is one of my favorites from that era...
