Subject: AT 40 Flashback:1980

Written By: james martin on 2/7/2001 at 1:02 p.m.

This past weekend American Top 40 re-ran the countdown of the top 40 hits from past week in 1980. IT WAS THE END OF PUNK THANK GOD!!! New Wave was just getting started, disco was breating its last breath, country, pop, hard rock(long before it was called classic rock), & R&B(long before their was such a thing as sampling or old school). These formats were HOT! HOT! HOT! as were the songs that I'm about to list. 90% of them I remember & I know you do as well. But those who don't, I challenge you again. HERE WE GO: #40 "The Second Time Around" Shalamar It was 2nd top 40 hit & their biggest hit reaching #8. #39 "Last Train To London" Electric Light Orchestra Unfortunately, that's where it would peak. It was their last Top 40 hit as a 7 piece band & from their final studio album "A New World Record" I may be wrong with that album title. #38 "When I Wanted You" Barry Manilow I challenge anyone to remember that forgotten Barry Manilow song. I almost did. It peak @ #20 # 37 "Ladies Night Kool & The Gang It already hit #8 & it made the biggest dropped within the top 40. It fell 24 notches OUCH!!! from #13 to #37 # 36 "Lost Her In The Sun" John Stewart another forgotten song John had 2 other songs in '79 "Gold" & "Midnight Wind" The 3rd song John charted would reached #34 #35 "You Know That I Love You" Santana another forgotten song. It would peaked @ that position. #34 "Wonderland" Commodores ditto on that song It would peaked @ #25 #33 "Cool Change" Little River Band It already hit #10 There was a rumor about song that former lead singer at the time Glenn Shorrock wrote the song about leaving the band. As we know he would do that. Twice. Remember most of these songs were hits during the tail end of of the 1979. #32 "Voices" Cheap Trick It would be their last Top 40 hit for 8yrs. Can anyone guess what song that brought them back? It would peak at that position #31 "Better Love Next Time" Dr. Hook It already hit #12 #30 "Do You Love What You Feel" Rufus The last hit that would featured Chaka Khan as the lead singer for 3 yrs. That song would peak @ that position as well. #29 "Working MY Way Back To You/Forgive Me Girl" Spinners It was another comback hit for the mighty Spinners & the first to feature new lead singer John Edwards It reached #2 #28 "Forever Mine" The O'Jays Sadly, it was last Top 40 hit on the pop chart & it would peak @ that position. #27 "Why Me?" Styx The follow-up to their #1 hit "Babe" Trivia note: This song wasn't supposed to be the follow-up to "Babe" It was a song called "First Time" "Why Me?" reached #26 #26 "Wait For Me" Hall & Oates kinda of a new wave song that hit #18 & it was @ their lowpoint that they had no creative control or direction on where they were heading. We all know what happened @ the beginning of the 80's. #25 "September Morn'" Neil Diamond Yes, Neil was hot in the 80's as well as a lot of soft rock artists. #17 #24 "Fool In The Rain" Led Zepplin Yes, The Zep did score Top 40 hits. 6 to be exact. "Fool" would the last hit for this legendary band. 8 months later, drummer John "Bonzo" Bonham died and we all know what happened next. #23 "Third Time Lucky"(First Time I Was A Fool) Foghat The last hit for them as well. Lead singer "Lonesome" Dave Peverett died last year in case anyone forgot. #22 "Desire" Andy Gibb Debut in the Top 40 @ that position. It was the 1st single from his last studio album "After Dark" and it would hit #4 #21 "An American Dream" The Dirt Band They dropped the "Nitty Gritty" name in '76; put it back in '82 when they went Country. #20 "Daydream Believer" Anne Murray Yes, it was remake of the old Monkees song from 1967 Trivia: That song was written by John Stewart #19 "Romeo's Tune" Steve Forbert a forgotten one-hit wonder Don't you think? #18 "Don't Let Go" Issac Hayes A comeback hit that would his last chart single on the pop chart #17 "Longer" Dan Fogerberg Beautiful song #16 "On The Radio" Donna Summer Yes, the Queen of Disco was still charting Question: Does anyone knows the movie it featured that song #15 "Deja Vu" Dionne Warwick Trivia: The song was co-written by Issac Hayes & produced by Barry Manilow #14 "Send One Your Love" Stevie Wonder It was from his forgotten follow-up album to "Songs In The Key Of Life" called "Journey To The Secret Life Of Plants" #13 "We Don't Talk Anymore" Cliff Richard It was the start of Cliff's return to the charts again after a slow start in the 50's & 60's. He would scored a top ten hit with "Devil Woman" in 1976; but it wasn't until late '79-80 when he came back with the song I mention #12 "This Is It" Kenny Loggins It would the first of many hit hits he would scored in the'80s #11 "I Wanna Be Your Lover" PRINCE before we went & change into that ridicious name It was the first of a string of hits he had before he felt he had no control of his artistic direction & didn't do no interviews in the '80s but made great music that decade. One he said he doesn't want to relive it. He said "That Was A Time Period" I may have to disagree with that statment #10 "Don't Do Me Like That" Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers It was a breakthrough hit for these Southern rockers #9 "Yes, I'm Ready Teri DeSario with K.C. It was K.C.'s last hit for 4yrs. #8 "The Long Run" Eagles title song from their last studio album #7 "Sara" Fleetwood Mac from their follow-up album "Rumors" called "Tusk" #6 "Escape(The Pina Colada Song)" Rupert Holmes #5 "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" Queen 1st single from their #1 album "The Game" #4 "Crusin'" Smokey Robinson It would be later be covered beautifully by Huey Lewis & Gynneth Patrow 20yrs later. #3 "Coward Of The County" Kenny Rogers #2 #Do That To Me One More Time" Captain & Tennille Sadly, it was the last top 40 hit they would ever have. #1 "Rock With You" Michael Jackson The second of 4 top ten singles from his "First" solo album(with Quincy Jones @ the helm) "Off The Wall" WHEW!!!!!!!!!! what a list but what great memories, diverities of such great music, good happy despite some people might throw up @ them. SO WHAT????? I was a sophomore @ Bonnabel High School and the music was magicial. BTW: If you remember the AT 40 archives: #1 songs from the 70's:"Dancing Queen" ABBA, "Don't Give Up On Us" David Soul & "Don't Leave Me This Way" (long version) The "Long Distance Dedication song was "I Write The Songs" Barry Manilow O.K. I know those were #1 songs from the 70's, but, I'm giving all of what was playing on AT 40. Now, Chucky G, 80'smusicfreak, Aj, Wicked Lester, anyone out there, I'm ready to challenge anyone that remembers the songs I listed. Some you will remember, some you probably won't. Let The Games Begin lol BTW, I've taped the show as much as I could.

The ELO album with "Last Train to London" was Discovery. I've still got the vinyl I bought in 1979. Great stuff... "Shine a Little Love", "Confusion", "The Diary of Horace Wimp", and of course "Don't Bring Me Down". I had completely forgotten that Manilow, and the John Stewart... I still remember "Gold" though. Little River Band's "Cool Change" is classic... I used to have that album too, but it wandered off over the years. I well remember the Zep song too; I still have the vinyl release of In Through The Out Door, which featured "Fool in the Rain". Didn't know Dave Peverett had passed away, but Foghat was a staple for my generation. Steve Forbert, ah yes... "Meet me in the middle of the day, it'll be okay...". Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers... "Don't Do Me Like That" turned me on to them, and, yes, I still have the vinyl of "Damn the Torpedoes" When "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" came out I was struck by the Elvis Presley sound it had, but maybe that was just my perception. Man, I wish I could go back to that time in my life for just one weekend!

Yes, you're right. It hit #1 in the summer of '88
