Subject: A song from "The Breakfast Club" was sampled

Written By: John Kilduff on 12/30/2000 at 5:07 p.m.

You read the headline right. The song in question is almost a year old, but it disturbed me to read the story anyway.

Late rapper Big Punisher sampled a beloved song on a track entitled "Laughing At You" from his posthumous album "Yeeah, Baby". The sample in question?...*Don't You (Forget About Me)* by *Simple Minds* from *"The Breakfast Club"*!

Can't they leave the memories of a generation at peace? I'm only 18 years old, but I know the feelings that are stirred up by this song. The music industry is eating its elders alive. When will it end? This is more proof that in the music world of today, nothing is sacred and everything is ripe for the picking.

What's next? The Human League? Motley Crue? Jeffrey Osborne? I'd better shut up now...I might give them ideas, silly as that may sound. I think I speak for a good chunk of those who love the 80s when I say that these songs are special to us and they don't need to be ripped apart, thrown on the modern grill and covered with sex, violence and vulgarity. I pity my generation, for most of them do not know the value of a good song. There are a few diamonds in the rough, but it's taking all my might to collect them.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff
