Subject: I'm 13 years old...

Written By: Jessica on 12/12/2000 at 11:15 p.m.

I'm 13 years old and I love the 80's. I really wish that I lived then!! In that last like week, I've been watching 80 movies, and I love them. My all time 2 favorites were Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club. I'm in LOVE with Duckie from Pretty in Pink. I think his name is Jon something. I forget. If I could change time, I would make it be the 80's again!!

The name in question is Jon Cryer. Did a few others movies as well. The last one I saw him in was Hot Shots many years ago. He has probably done some since then, but I don't pay attention.

Until about 6 months ago, I thought I was one of very few who remembered the 80's. Now that I've seen this and many other sites, there are thousands (if not millions) who would like to have a Delorean and go back in time.

I was actually looking in the market to buy an used or refurbished Delorean and the cheapest I could find was a 1981 standard model at $11,000 for a car that had like 55K miles (not bad...) and the highest was at $32,000 for a 1982 refurbished automatic model (somewhat rare), but mechanics around here don't recommend buying one (unless you're a collector, they state it's probably one of the WORST financial decisions one could make).
They say I would have better luck with a Porsche 928 of the same year (and that's bad enough in itself). Man! And I wanted a Delorean soooo bad.

I doubt very much the mechanic you talked to knew what he was talking.. the engine is a volvo v-6, not a hard engine to find parts for since it was used in other vehicles.. and probably the one component that needs any kind of care paid to it.. compared to a Porsche engine it might not be powerful, but I bet it's a hell of a lot easier to maintain

the body panels are stainless steel, so they don't rust, though replacement parts are expensive when in an accident..

I still see a few on the roads still.. I wouldn't recommend it for a daily vehicle, but they are no where near as bad as the reputation they earned (the early models from the factory had some quality control issues) but I think a 20 year old vehicle needs regular care no matter who made it..

and yes.. I've been checking them out too.. even 20 years later, people notice them.. a 1981 Porsche on the other hand.. just looks like an old Porsche.. which are really a dime a dozen in my book..

I wanted this car as a regular mode of transportation - that's why the mechanic didn't recommend it.

I thought the Delorean also used Renault parts (and beleive me, Renaults are REAL pieces of junk-
my father owned one and it's worse than a Yugo or a Fiat)...Maybe I was misinformed...

yeah, I would second that.. you don't buy an old car for regular transportation (unless you can't afford anything else)

nothing was worse than a Yugo (Fiat is a close second) I don't recall DeLorean using Renault parts, but I could be wrong..

if you're going for a used 80s car, the most dependable I remember having was the Chrysler K-cars.. the Dodge Aires, Pylmouth Reliant, Chrylser LeBaron.. boxy, not real quick to accelerate, but they lasted forever..

early 90s cars that take a beatin'? Toyota and Nissan, (my friend swears by Nissan) the American cars are starting to get better at longer lasting vehicles, but it's takin' a while

incase you're wondering.. my father was a mechanic, and I saw a lot of vehicles come and go, and those are his (and mine) recommendations..

I ended up buying a 96 Toyota Camry...dependable, but no style.
