Subject: What was it like in the 80's??
I was not alive in most if the 80's. I wish I was there when ferris buellers day off came out because then nobody would think I was weird and waaaaaay out of my times. All I want for christmas is someone to talk to about my obsession with. If you like Ferris and his awsome movie and have something interesting to say write me and i'll write you back.

I grew up in the eighties- Im 35 this year-oh my god Im old!.In the U.K things were all doom and gloom,For years the trade unions ran british industry which was by then on its knees.Margaret Thatcher tried to put it right with tough words and some tough action. things got worse with strikes bringing already weakened companys into liquidation. Her salvation came in the shape of the Falklands war.Britain needed a tough leader and she was there at the right time. As high school kids we all thought this was so cool- we were allowed to listen to the radio at lunchtimes and morning assembly always had uppdates on the progress of the Task Force.Being Herefordshire born and bred it was all the more poiniant when bad news came-SAS casualties-(SAS were based in Hereford)-HMS Antelope hit (adopted ship of Hereford;the pub on barton road is still there.- HMS Sheffield hit( exocet missile into the control
room,we were standing in the control room a few months previously on a school trip to portsmouth base.
The miners were on strike and at war with the government, and then riots for no apparent reason
The music was great though, depeche mode ,ultravox, duran duran,et al
Then around 85 it all went tame, boring and never recovered.since then no period has inspired me until say the last 2-3 years .the music is better and the Pc has made its mark

The 80's were indeed The Best. It was a very Fun time for the majority of us. Though I must point out that many of the ugly things mentioned as not happening during the 80's or not until the late 80's were in fact around the entire decade: Drugs, Gangs, AIDS, Homelessness, War, etc, etc.
But the fact that many of us didn't pay too much attention to the ugly realities of the world, the fact that many of us were having too much fun to care, too busy playing in the arcades, rollerskating and dancing to excellent, original and innovative music in the skating rinks and discotheques, partying, etc, etc...
...That, my friend, was The Magic of the 80's.
It was easier to "disconnect" (if you will) from the realities of the world.

Wait, wait, wait, wait. Who thinks you're weird for liking Ferris? How can you not love the Sausage King of Chicago?
Hmmmm. Life in the 80s.
No cell phones, beepers, or, in my house, microwaves. (Yes, we did have indoor plumbing) A total of five television stations if you were lucky. Atari video games you'd hook up to the TV and drive the parents insane with the sound of exploding asteroids. But the biggest difference was the amazing lack of computers. I wrote papers by hand, doing research out of the family's ancient encyclopedias, and bitched when the teacher gave me a low grade for "illegibility". The only people playing with PC's were small, shy, socially inept nerds. (They're all now multimillionaires, driving obscenely expensive cars and I for one am glad.)
That and the fact that everyone I knew thought we'd live forever...

I was 6 when the great 80's began. The music, tv shows, game shows, cartoons movies, everything was better in the 80's. I remember the countless quarters I spent playing Galaga, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Qbert, etc. It was such a carefree time. It was just plain FUN to grow up in that time period.
In three words: SIMPLY THE BEST!

I don't remember the early 80's real well, but from about 84 on I remember much better. I recall a HUGE obsession with pac-man for about 3 years. I had to have EVERYTHING pac-man. Arcades were all over the place, and hardly anybody could afford an Atari, Colectvision, or Intellivision game system. The graphics were blocky, but we loved them. Breakdancing was popular for about a year at my grade/middle school.
Parachute pants were short lived. I remember during the late 80's, Nike Air shoes were HOT. Nike got the pleasure of ripping us off for at least $65 (most were significantly higher) for a pair of shoes that just had a plastic bubble filled with air, and claimed it made you feel like you were walking on air. Yeah...ok.
I never saw Ferris Bueller in the theater, but I saw it the following year. I remember seeing Back to the Future 2 & 3 in the theater. Way cool.
Most of my time was spend arount the computers during that time. The days where nobody could afford a hard disk, 2400 baud was a luxury, and we all used a BBS (what is the internet??).
I also remember during the mid-late 80's, several bands or soloists were at their peak. Belinda Carlisle had a HUGE hit with Heaven is a place on earth, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard were really big, and Debbie Gibson came out.
Teen pregnancy wasn't a problem like it is today (it was there, but not this bad). Drugs weren't quite so bad. Kids didn't bring guns to school (well, maybe in LA), if they had a problem, they went to the parking lot to fight.
And every year someone you knew (or that was well known in the school) was killed in a car wreck.
In my mind, the only thing that has gotten better with time is technology. That's it. I can't stand the 90's music, cars, fads, and the like.
Well thats just what it was like where I lived.

Ohh you missed a good time. We wish you were there too. The drinking age was 19 for beer, and ALL of us had a fake ID that got us into bars. Its too bad you couldnt go the movies with us to watch Pink Floyd the Wall, Breakfast Club, Some Kind of Wonderfull and Pretty in Pink. MTV played good bands like Big Country, Adam Ant, The Police and U2. We had the cold war hanging over our heads. Which ment we would have bomb drills in school...but we still had all the fun a generation could have.
The girls wanted to look like Cindy Lauper and the boys tried to look like Billy Idol. (maybe it was just me) When Prince came out with Purple Rain, we would go to the drive-in every weekend to make out. (the cars back then were alot bigger)
Toward the end of the 80s, some bad things started to surface...Crack was invented, AIDS was spreading into the Hetro group and More and more people were commiting bad crimes. However, it was then that we got out of high school, entered the univ scene and started to grow up. We didnt have gangs or shootings, just alot of fun before the country changed. We wish you could have been there.
