Subject: Song Title

Written By: Mark Turner on 11/30/2000 at 12:18 a.m.

I'd really love to find out who did this song in the 80's...the band really sounded like the Police but they weren't. The song was very reggae based and the singer sounded like Sting or Colin Hay from Men at Work. The only words I can remember are..."Sheriff came to town today...said I had to go away...Thanks in advance and I'll buy you a cold one!!!

From the info John gave, I looked it up. On The Tenants self-titled (and only) album from 1983 has a song titled "Sheriff." Hope this helps.

For the record, The Tenants actually released two albums, TX. Of course, I have them both on cassette. The band was Canadian, and they were signed to Epic/CBS. When they released their s/t debut up in Canada in early 1983, the lead single, "Sheriff", became a moderate hit. It was enough to convince CBS to also release the album Stateside that Summer, and "Sheriff" was pushed as the lead single here, too. Unfortunately, it failed to chart here in America, despite having "top 40" written all over it, IMO - great song!

The Tenants then recorded and released their second album, "Visions of Our Future", in 1984. But unlike their '83 debut, it was released up in their native Canada only. Because "Sheriff" had regrettably been a stiff here in the U.S. the year before, Epic/CBS elected to pass on a Stateside release of "Visions...". As a result, "Visions..." is a very tough album to find, even up in Canada, but I lucked out and found it on cassette while on a music-buying trip up to the Great White North last year. A fun pop band worth checking out...
