Subject: Who sung the 80's song, "Stand By Me"?

Written By: Andrew on 11/15/2000 at 5:07 p.m.

I'm not talking about the resurrected Ben E. King classic, but there was a song I believe that was in the 80's that was called "Stand By Me". A male sings it and I believe it is a very short song. Any help would be great.

Since you indicated it wasn't Ben E. King, that leaves three other songs that were hits here in the U.S. w/ "Stand By Me" in the title, and all w/ male vocals:

1) "Train in Vain (Stand By Me)" was a moderate hit for The Clash in the Spring of '80. The 7" version clocked in at 3:46...

2) Country singer Mickey Gilley landed his biggest pop crossover hit w/ "Stand By Me" in the Summer of '80, hitting the top 40. It was a cover of King's 1961 classic. The single came in at 3:38...

3) Finally, Earth, Wind & Fire's Maurice White scored a moderate solo hit w/ his own version of the King classic in the Fall of '85. The timing on the 7" version was 3:46...

Any possibilities here???

Yes! It was the Clash. I checked it up on Napster, and it was the exact same song I heard. Thank you so much...

If you liked "Train in Vain", check out Garbage's "Stupid Girl" and you'll notice all the sampling.
