Subject: Styx - were they any good?
I know nothing about Styx (other than the song 'Babe') but saw a song mentioned in one of the Top 10 lists called "Mr Roboto". Were they shite? Were they Rock/Pop/Metal or a combination? Which albums should I listen to if any?

Styx was one of those groups that did a lot of concept albums, each album had a theme of sorts, and some were even full blown rock operas... personally, I never cared for their albums, but loved the singles from them.. "Blue Collar Man" is probably my favorite tune from them..and "Fooling Yourself" is another cool hard rockin' tune.. "Babe" was very soft rock, which they also did..
I recommend the greatest hits collection their record label, A&M put out, one of their "classics series" volume 4 or something (the volume numbers refer to the classic series, which encompassed all of A&M's big selling groups, Supertramp was one of the featured groups as well, another excellent band) there are other greatest hits CDs put out as well, but I don't know much about them... of course, it appears that it's out of print now too...

If you enjoy their greatest hits, then I recommend
the album "The Grand Illusion."
Many of the original fans didn't care for the album "Kilroy was Here" finding unlike their 70s albums (think 70s band tries new wave), although it does contain the song Mr. Roboto you mentioned. Early albums like "Crystal Ball" and and "Styx II" are very operatic in their style and have superb vocals by Dennis Deyoung. But, unless you're a big fan of a layered elaborate sound, they can be meandering at times. (Only for the truly Styx fascinated).
