Subject: Chicago: Behind The Music

Written By: james martin on 9/29/2000 at 11:33 p.m.

ATTENTION Chicago fans: on Oct 15, vh1 will do a Behind The Music profile on one of the most sucessful, gifted, talented loving and somtimes hated by the critics band of the last 34 years: Chicago. they've sold over 120 million records, 12 Top Ten albums (5 have had gone to #1), 20 Top Ten singles(3 of them have had gone to #1), 26 albums(soon to be 27),and army of fans that have followed this band's ups and downs in their 34 year musical career. We'll see their beginnings(no pun intended), how they surrivived the death of their guitarist Terry Kath, the departures of both their former lead singer Peter Cetera & drummer Danny Seraphine, the changes of the musical taste from punk to disco to alternative and still becoming one of the best bands in the last 4 decades. this is one of the episodes I've been waiting for almost 3 years and my only problem is will this episode be 60min or 90? personally, i hope it's 90 because after all those years in the business, they have plenty of stories to tell about. I know some of you will post your message on Chicago selling out in the 80's by using a lot of synthesizers and working with super producer David Foster on changing the band's sound and not using a lot of horns on some of their albums (Chicago 17 to be one of them). Personally, I liked their stuff from the 80's Think about it, if you were Chicago (the group) between 1978-81 and your last 3 albums, Hot Streets, XIII & XIV were bombs, and your record company drops you from the label, where do you go? follow the video age & change your music or go back to square one: playing the clubs instead of the arenas and having a hard time playing in the biggest gigs and playing with the biggest artists of the time. PONDER THAT THOUGHT IN YOUR MIND. comments please.
