Subject: Looking for a particular kind of music

Written By: StormyRed on 8/25/2000 at 1:27 p.m.

Hello all! I'm the one that wrote to find the song from Little Darlings (Shake It by Ian Matthews). What I want to know is if anyone can recommend any similar-sounding songs to me. I don't know exactly what kind of music you'd categorize it as... sort of pop with saxophone in it. Another example is Year of the Cat from the 70's. I love this kind of sound, but haven't heard it in very many songs. Any ideas? Thx again!

The first thing that came to mind when I read your message was "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty. Then came "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright.

For some reason, those two songs, along with your "Year of the Cat", are linked in my head - I can't hear one without thinking of the other two. They have a similar feel and lightness.

If it's the sax your after, one of my favourites is The (English) Beat. I know they're a ska band, but they do have some pretty mellow and melodious songs. "Save it for Later", their cover of Andy William's "Can't Get Used to Losing You", and maybe even "Doors of Your Heart" are perfect examples.

I could go on. (In fact I have but I deleted it because I tend to be long of wind.) Is it just the sound of the sax you want or are you also after the mood/feel of "Year of the Cat"?

John

PS: Just in case you respond over the weekend, I won't be near my computer until Monday.

Hello again, Stormy! It sounds like you're into the same kind of sound that I am. I love a lot of the easy listening/slow rock songs from the 70's. Chucky was right...Gerry Rafferty is an excellent choice...either "Baker Street", or one of my all-time favs "Right Down The Line". I'm sure you would enjoy him very much. Let's see who comes to mind...uh, what about Pablo Cruise? They were another band from the same time period. Also, you might like the Atlanta Rhythm Section...they had hits like "So Into You" and "Imaginary Lover". Good stuff! I hope this helps you a little bit.

Try the 80s band, Quarterflash, their self titled debut album especially, lots of sax in that album, don't know about their greatestest hits album though (which is also available)

I also remember a couple of great songs on the Lost Boys Soundtrack that would certainly be along the lines of what you're looking for.. I actually enjoy sax in rock music myself, it's nice to hear it occasionally.. like in Rio by Duran Duran for instance..

I love Year of the Cat.. another 70s album I bought around the same time comes to mind, Gerry Rafferty, Baker Street

and a lot of Chicago's early albums as well, are quite heavy on the horns.. though significantly slower in tempo..
