Subject: 80's Foods
First off I love this site, but the foods section is full of errors. Most notably RC Cola; it says RC originated in the 80's. It was actually started in 1910! RC is very popular, I can't believe anyone would think it started in the 80's. Also Kentucky Fried Chicken is listed. Come on guys, you know better than that! KFC has been around for over 60 years! There are more too. This is a nice site but you've really got to do your homework before posting things like that. I hope you'll update the page and fix these glaring errors.

RC cola made its first inroads in America in the 80s.. when it originated, who cares
and the KFC reference is to one of their products, nowhere does it state something like "KFC came into existence in the 80s"
I think you need to calm down a little

Hi Chucky.
About RC, its popluarity in the 80s might more accurately be described as a resurgence. It made "its first inroads in America" long before that. It was quite a popular soft drink in the 1960s. Leafing through old magazines from the mid to late 60s, you will find lots of RC Cola advertisements, on par with the advertising of Coke and Pepsi. If they were advertising and being consumed on a national basis in the 60s, this predates any 1980s popularity. For another example of RC's national prominence in the 60s, check out the "Movin' With Nancy" program which is sometimes broadcast on AMC (American Movie Classics). It is a rebroadcast of a Nancy Sinatra special which aired on network TV in the late 60s. The program was originally sponsored in its entirety by RC cola. The AMC version keeps all of the RC Cola ads in it.
Regarding the 80s and RC: I think that what happened was that RC's popularity waned in the 70s as Coca-Cola and Pepsi grew more dominant. Then, the "Cola Wars" of the 80s came about and apparently RC made use of it as an opportunity to try to regain lost ground in the market. Since people Coke drinkers were being encouraged to try Pepsi, and vice versa, perhaps RC could get both to try to drink RC.
Also, in 1980, RC introduced the first caffeine-free diet cola, RC 100, so that also could have contributed to the resurgence of RC's popularity. (And this is a definite 80s debut for RC . . .)
So, basically, RC saw a resurgence in the 80s. It did not first come to national prominence or begin to catch on for the first time in the 80s. It had alread become popular in (at least) the 60s before they slowed up in the 70s.
I like RC. I give them a lot of credit. Through thick and thin, they never went away.
(By the way, since the subject of the founding of Royal Crown cola came up. According to their web site, they began in 1905.)

By the way, Chucky, I posted my info on RC for the historical interest, not as a criticism of your site or your post. (I love your site. It's great!) If you feel that this information sheds further light on RC, then that's good. If not, that's good too. I just thought it might help straighten this issue out a little.

not a problem.. the description for RC cola on that page probably needs to be rewritten to clear up the misconceptions, so I don't have to deal with people sending me mail about something like this.. it's one of those minor things that people get overly worked up about..
I actually have to admit, I didn't even think they had a national presence in the 60s.. they certainly seem to have lost it in the 90s though.. I can't think of the last time I saw it.. maybe it's still popular somewhere else

You can still find it here in the Jackson, MS area. Kroger for sure, and Albertson's too I think. I've never like it really, but it is available. What I can't find is the old Chocolate Soldier drinks. Anyone remember those?
