Subject: Pre-VCR disc player?

Written By: Sybil on 8/14/2000 at 8:15 p.m.

does anyone remember the disc player that existed before the VCR (i think it was before)? the discs played movies, and were about the size of record. the discs themselves were in thin plastic cases. you would insert the plastic case into the disc player, and pull it out, leaving the disc inside. the movie would play, and about halfway through, you were prompted to flip the disc over. this was done by reinserting the plastic case, pulling it out, flipping it over, etc.
anyway, i'd like to look this up online. no one believes me when i say that such a thing existed. it's like the whole "milk-in-a-bag" story.
thank you kindly!

YES!!! My parents had one of these players, and my father would NOT buy a VCR until the demise of this machine. **laugh** He was sold on the idea that it was better quality picture and sound - and he was right. I think they may actually have their old machine still. I *know* they still own a bunch of the movies, because I keep running across them in their basement storage room. I guess they don't have the heart to part with 'em - they have Annie, Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, 9 to 5, and a bunch of other "classic" 70's and 80's flicks. I can't believe someone besides me remembers these. I actually had to pull out the Star Wars one to prove to a friend of mine that they did, indeed, exist.

Thanks for the fun memories!! ^.^

I believe these discs were called laser discs but they definitely were not PRE-VCR. VCRs existed long before they did. However, you could probably say they were pioneers for present day DVDs.

As ChuckyG correctly stated below back on August 15, she is clearly describing CED's, not laser discs (LD's). But it's true that CED's were not pre-VCR, either, as they hit their height of popularity in the late '70s/early '80s. (CED's were gone by the late '80s. Laser discs, of course, lasted well into the '90s.) I still see old used CED's in second-hand shops, alongside 8-tracks, and the like. Look 'em up on eBay for players and pics of what they and the discs themselves looked like - CED's and LD's are NOT the same thing!!!
