Subject: answering machines

Written By: Lisa on 7/13/2000 at 11:37 a.m.

Anyone remember when their family brought home the first answering machine? Everybody says answering machines became popular in the eighties, but I've heard some people had Phonemates at the end of the seventies.

Also, how much did those early ones cost?

Thanks for any info. I'm doing a research project.

I'll look up the cost tonight in my Sears catalog to give you some numbers..

my family got their first one in the early 80s.. I remember them from the seventies, if only because of the opening to "The Rockford Files"

its more like they started to become a standard in 80s...but i remember seeing them as prizes on the 'the match game' in the late 70s
