Subject: I'm Depressed...
I was looking at Chuck's page about 90s songs that are remakes of 80s songs, and under the entry for Duran Duran's "Notorious" (Recently bastardized by Puff Daddy for a new song by the late Notorious B.I.G) (Then again, everything Puff-bag does is a bastardization), I saw that John Taylor gave approval to the destruction of the song. John said that it "gave new life to the song". His comment has sent me deeper into an ever-spiraling funk of disillusionment with the music world. This all started last week when I went to see the Martin Lawrence movie "Big Momma's House". I always stay for the credits of the movies I see (to look for gag credits, additional scenes and dialogue, and messing around with production company logos). I glanced over the soundtrack list as it scrolled up the silver screen that I love dearly, and I was angered that one of the rap songs on the soundtrack ripped off (Get ready for this one)...Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"! I was shocked, and I walked out of the theater punching my fist into my hand and cursing the horrific idea of sampling. My frustration with sampling hit a new level when I found out that the late Big Punisher ripped off (You won't believe this one)..."Need You Tonight" by INXS! It was sampled for a song on the soundtrack to "How Stella Got Her Groove Back". I don't know whether to thank the Internet Movie Database or make like Elvis, grab a gun, and shoot my computer screen. You think we're done on the roller-coaster of sampling? Not by a long shot, because we still have one more loop left. I was in a music store, and I was glancing over the selection of used CDs. I saw a used copy of Mase's "Harlem World", and I looked at the track listings to see what 80s classics were ruined, and I saw something that horrified me beyond repair. CULTURE CLUB, of all people, were sampled on the album. The CC song in question was "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?", and the song with the sample was named "Wanna Hurt Mase". I'm more P.O'd than the Penguin whacking Jake and Elwood over the head with a wooden stick for cursing in her presence. Yes, I know sampling is pretty much the basis of rap, and that as a 17-year-old, I should probably just sit back and enjoy the nastiness and not listen for samples. I'm not a typical 17-year-old. I am an 80s fanatic, and I love 80s music. I long for more originality in music, but I highly doubt I'll ever see it again in my lifetime. One final note: Puff Daddy protege Lil' Kim rips off Pat Benatar's song "Heartbreaker" on her new album "Notorious K.I.M". I don't own these albums, nor do I ever plan on owning them. I'm just on the lookout for mutilations of music from the 80s, and I'm finding more corpses by the day. I just find about sampling through magazines and the Internet. I've had all I can stand, and I can't stand anymore.
Sincerely,
John Kilduff

Is it any wonder that when the video to Rick James' "Super Freak" was used on "Beavis & Butt-Head," one of them said, "U can't touch this," and the other responded "I can't watch this!" And the guy who did a rap song based on this should be hit on the head with a hammer!

You know what? I don't even listen to top 40 radio anymore. It's all C-R-A-P. Music today is garbage. I listen to smooth jazz, lite rock, and of course my 80s music. I wish rap would breakout into an infection and die a slow painful death! Granted, sampling was bearable when it was just maybe 1 or 2 songs and that's it. But now, every other song is ripped off from the wonderful 80s!!! All those rappers are just trash anyway, so don't get TOO upset Thank goodness for ChuckyG's 80s site! John, I give you praise. not very many 17 year olds I think can appreciate the 80s. Oh well, I don't live in the here and now. On New Years Eve 1999, I think the whole (mainstream) went down the toilet! Granted I don't hate the 90s, far from it, but I'm sure not fond of Y2K so far. That is why my friend and I are starting a band that plays ORIGINAL music!! We are going to be part 80s synth pop/part early 90s techno, but we will definately have an 80s look. I guarantee it. The music world NEEDS it! NOW!!! I'm thru ranting!!
peace,

Poor Poor John!! I feel for ya!! I was so angry when I heard Jessic Simpson's new song (whatever it's called, I don't listen to teeny bopper junk) sung to the tune of Jack and Diane from John Mellancamp! The music doesn't match the lyrics or the type of song she wanted to do. Everybody from the 90s is ripping off stuff from the 80s. The originality is gone. So just remember in your rage, that you are not alone!

wait until you read this week's Entertain Weekly (Weakly?)... entitled, I'll be Back (how original guys) it describes all the sequels in the work for movies over the course of the next few years.. 80s flicks being considered?
Terminator Part 3 (taking place during the wars that won't happen anyways since the whole storyline was supposed to end as a result of the end of the T2 movie)
Indiana Jones part 4.. probably won't happen until 2007.. umm.. hello, Harrison Ford is almost 60 NOW guys.. unless he's going to play his own father (which would be nowhere near as good as Sean Connery's portrayal) I would hope it's a prequel...
Crocodile Dundee 3, Crocodile Dundee in LA.. ok.. the second one wasn't THAT bad, but I could think of better sequels.. so why a third? if it has "That's not a knife...etc" it should be pretty predicatable...
hmmm.. thanks.. I was wondering what this month's newlsetter was going to have a rant about.. problem solved >grin<
I don't think any body has been visiting since the first year of the site.. but the covers page is like one of the first pages I put on the site.. I believe Marilyn Manson was the big reason behind it.. and all the Mansonites (Masonites?) came out of the wood work to defend it.... but it's cool to know that page still has some meaning behind it..

At least there's no Police Academy, Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street among them…

Actually, I heard a rumour that they were going to make a new combined installment to the "Friday the 13th" and "Nightmare on Elm Street" series. This new movie will supposedly have both Freddy Kruger AND Jason in it.

Not yet anyways. Seriously though, with so much rampant MP3 trading going on over the net, soon the words "All rights reserved" won't mean anything and the bastardisation of our favourite songs will get far worse than it already is. The biggest problem I have with artists (particularly rap artists) performing covers is that they rarely treat the song with respect: The poignancy of the lyrics of U2's "Pride" being compromised for the benefit of a dancebeat courtesy of C&C Music Factory, or that group that put that stupid rap part on the end of an otherwise acceptable version of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly"--what were they thinking when they did that? When something becomes a commodity, there's no room left for sentimentality.
