Subject: VEGETABLE SOUP

Written By: the80s!!! on 6/21/2000 at 1:45 p.m.

Julia's posting about "The Letter People" and BoyOfCorn's comment about the "drug-induced" music on that show got me thinking . . .

Does anyone remember the show on PBS called "Vegetable Soup"? It was one weird educational show. Kind of like Sesame Street on drugs.

I remember they had this really weird animation: odd looking figures all elongated drawn in that squiggly style, and the colours and backgrounds would flash and change while they sang odd songs. They also had a puppet segment with that centered around these kids who tried to build a spaceship in their backyard. I remember that the music in this segment was weird, too . . . and the puppets had semi-realistic faces (with mouths that didn't move) and their arms were short, immoble, and kind of stuck out of the fronts of their bodies. The leader puppet was a kid who wore a black T-shirt and a red baseball cap. He wore the cap backwards.

The show was comprised of the puppet segements, the weird animation songs, and other shorts.

Anyone remember this or know if there are any web sites devoted to it on the web?

Oooh-oooh! I remember! I remember! Yeah, that show was really weird. I vaguely remember the theme song and the psychedelic animation at the beginning (an elongated bowl of vegetable soup and flashing colors all over the place).

I also remember those puppets too. They were a small band of kids. Didn't they journey into space in some sort of spaceship all the time? Kind of cone shaped with planks all around it...it looked like a shuttlecock! And didn't they get it to blast off by mixing some sort of ingredients together? I think the last one was yeast. But they always yelled it because that's when take-off was imminent. "Something, water(?), YEAST!!!" Then they'd go explore space.

Please tell me I'm not crazy!!! :)

You've got the show!!!

I'm not sure about the formula for getting the spaceship to blast off, but I do remember them yelling something at blast off.

Did you know that the show was produced by the New York State Department of Education? Pretty wild, no?

Since I posted my message, I have found one small piece of the Web dedicated to Vegetable Soup, it's on the Yesterdayland board. ( Click on the link to get to the page. You'll enjoy some of the memories posted by visitors to the site.) From some of the messages posted on the Yesterdayland site, it appears that the show still airs at odd times in the NYC area. So, Vegetable Soup lives !!!
