Subject: Artist/Title of R & B song

Written By: TX on 6/1/2000 at 6:41 p.m.

This is a song from 83-85. I thought it sounded like New Edition (Lost In Love or Is This The End type of sound) but couldn't find it anywhere. It also sounds kind of like Ready for the World (Tonight), had know luck there either. The only line I can remember is "I promise you, I really do love you" or close to it. If anyone has any ideas I would like to hear them. I could be way off, it's only been 15 years or so since I heard it.

This should be an easy one for you 80smusicfreak ;o)

Thanks TX.

Your "mystery song" is most likely "I Promise (I Do Love You)" by Dreamboy, a moderate r&b hit (and minor pop hit as well - just missed "Billboard" magazine's "Hot 100" chart, going to #106) from the Fall of '84. (In addition to the title, note this also fits your time frame perfectly.) Dreamboy were a five-man group out of Michigan, all in their early 20s at the time of their hit (again, matching your New Edition/Ready for the World comparison). The song was off their 1984 album, "Contact". The album is long out-of-print, and was issued on vinyl LP and cassette only; unfortunately, it's never been re-issued on CD here in the U.S...

I still run across the "Contact" album on cassette every now & then while out on my record-store travels, and must admit have come very close to buying it on a couple of occasions, just to see what they sounded like (or if I remembered that song). And for the record, Dreamboy were signed to Quincy Jones' Qwest label (through Warner Bros.), and had previously released a self-titled 6-song EP in late 1983 (also issued on both vinyl and cassette), which included an even bigger r&b hit, "Don't Go" (which failed to cross over to pop). After the release of "Contact" almost a year later, they disappeared...

Now, run out & hit those used record stores, TX - and oh, make sure you tell the cashier the album is really a surprise birthday gift for your wife/gf!!! ;-)
