Subject: food and religion and theaters of the 80's
hi, the specific types of food and religion and theaters of the 80's that i am researching on is not really important. Basically, i just need to know what were the people in that time of era into. Like today, religions are basically free of choice to practice, but how about back in the 80's? Was there any specific type of religion that was really popular back in the 80's and were there any that weren't allowed or banned? Also, what were some of the popular types of food people such as teenagers were into during that time of era? I heard bazooka bubble gum was really popular. Last of all, what types of plays were people going to watch during the 80's that made a really big hit do you know? If you do I would trully appreciate it. Thank-you again for taking your time to help me with my questions. By the way, your site is very informational, I went to over hundreds of site researching on stuff in the 80's and none divided it into so many categories such as you had, i had to go to millions of different ones to find certain informations that I was looking for. Keep up the good work! kristi

Scientology which had been around since the 50's became in vogue with the running of all the commercials for L. Ron Hubbard's Scientology books.. John Travolata and Kirstie Alley were two of the big names that became hooked up with those people...
The moral majority was a new Christian Right movement, which I believe has been replaced now by the Christian Coaliation... basically the same message, ban rock music, ban abortion, society is going to hell in a handbasket, etc. etc. They did succeed in enlisting Tippie Gore to help them with the pretty much mandatory now labeling of offensive lyrics... that was done through a group called the PMRC, which I forget what the lyrics stand for...
the pope was shot in 1981
Sun Myung Moon "Moonies" married 4000 followers at once in Madison Square Garden in 1982
Salvador Rushdie in 1988 wrote the Satanic Verses, which challenged Islamic fundamentalists claim to a religion founded by an infailable prophet.... As a result Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini was condemed to death and and promised heaven to anyone who was martyred in the attempt. He is still in hiding to this day, the bounty at one point was $6 million dollars).
I sympathize with you trying to find info on religious movements during the 80s, since there isn't much literature at all on it... as a result I'm going to start a new page on it once I move the site to it's new address. I tried a few of my better books on history from the 80s, and well, the Chrisitan Coalition or the PMRC trials aren't even mentioned... so depending on how thorough your research needs to be, you should probably consider that info a starting point... Scientology also wasn't really covered.. there was a great article about it in Time magazine around 1989-1990 that I remember reading, try your library for the 'fiche...
Subject: Popular candies
A lot of the foods that were popular then are still around now. I remember the candy 'Nerds' had just come out, and they were everywhere. Gummy Bears too. When I was little, I liked those colorful 'candy dots' that came on the roll of paper (if you know what I'm talking about) but I don't know if that was the 70's or early 80's.

Of course! How could I have forgotten Pop Rocks and Fruit Roll-Ups?? Everyone in school had those Roll-Ups in their lunchboxes...you could buy like, 10 of them for $1.00! And you know the Coke thing was just a scam...companies will do anything to call attention to themselves! And everyone would buy it at least once to see if it was as bad as everbody said it was! LOL
