Subject: Lyrics with meaning
Hello all,
Yesterday as I was driving I began thinking alot about this message board (actually i was quite amazed at how much i enjoy this board) and was trying to come up with a good topic. Low and behold for some reason a song popped into my head and I really started thinking about how much the lyrics to this song meant to me growing up. I am sure everyone has that one set of lyrics that to this day send shivers down your spine every time you hear it (even if it is the millionth time you have listened to it.)
I am going to share mine with a reason why it meant so much to me I would love for you to share yours.
Song: Everyday is Halloween
Group: Ministry (when they were good in the 80's)
Lyrics: "Why can't I live a life for me
Why should I take the abuse that's served
Why can't they see their just like me
It's the same in the whole wide world."
For some these lyrics may say nothing to me they said the world when I was in High School.
My High School years were 1983-1986 and basically the height of New Wave music. My circle of friends were the one's spiking our hair, wearing combat boots, shopping at the thrift stores, colored eye makeup (pick a color we wore it) anything you saw on Duran Duran, Adam Ant, Culture Club we wore it.
Of course we were the outcasts (at least to others.) We normally faced many confrontations with other cliques be it the cheerleaders, the rednecks, or the Metal Heads and the jocks just because of the way we chose to look. This song was my anthem because I always knew that my "look" was nothing more than an image and inside we are all the same.
Today, I am all grown up (snicker) 30 years old and basically still face the same ridicule not for the way I dress but because I am gay. At least in High School the obstacles i met were for the most part superficial but in reality it's all the same argument. If you don't look like me or act like me you are inferior. Anyway to quit my ramblings and get down from my soapbox.
Today these lyrics still say a lot to me.
"IT'S THE SAME IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD"

This is my first visit to this link and I'm loving it. Dan, when I read your post my heart kind of stopped for a second. In high school my best friend and I were in the same place as you were. We were the weird ones. The freaks. Our style of dress made us the outcasts in an all girl catholic school. But what really got me was the song you quoted. My friend had that song next to her picture in the yearbook-
"Anywhere that I go people stop and stare, they say why are you dressed like it's Halloween-you look so absurd, you look so obscene. Why can't I live a life for me, why should I take the abuses, why can't they see they are just like me. It's the same in the whole wide world."
That song definately was her anthem. All we wanted was to be left alone with our "unique ways". We didn't need to be accepted by anyone-we accepted ourselves. We just wanted everyone to realize it's the same in the whole wide world.

Hi Dan. I'm 30, too, and I've think think a little about what you've written. I think it's not that you are different or look different, think different, listen different music or read different books, it's just that you show 'em how ignorants they're. It's like when people talk to me about TV shows or light entertainment. I don't know a bit these kind of TV, for the main reason that I don't watch TV, just films or informatives. SO then, they treat you like if you were losing one important thing, because you can't understand some jokes or features. I thing it's just they don't wannna ask themselves if they're spending the time profitly, reading, listening music, writing,...For them, I look like a perfect stranger, i'm not in the mood.
In fact,I don't care it, I know what I'm doing, and I'm trying to live my life, the only thing I know it's mine, getting the best. And the best is always yet to come.

I agree with you Marc and if only I knew back then what I know today (gosh how's that for sounding like my parents) I live my life today the way I want and let nobody dictate what is good or right for me.
Thanks for your input.
