Subject: Another Rewind review--from Boston

Written By: Sandra on 8/12/1998 at 4:27 p.m.

I figured if anyone could appreciate this it would be this board ...

Howard Jones
OK, Howard, we realize that you had, like, 8 top 40 hits in the 80s (and he really did, I have realized), but that doesn’t give you the excuse to strut across the stage as if you were Bono. And that thing where you stick the microphone out into the audience so we can sing the lyrics for you? A tip: Wait until you sing them at least once, so we can know what they sound like!! And we know you’re kind of old, your hair is receding, and it can’t take the blond dye anymore, so obviously you’re rather enjoying this leftover fame, but really, all we wanted to do was hear you sing so we could be transported back to 1984 and 1985. All that new stuff (three songs for your 40-minute set on a REWIND tour was a bit much) we could have done without. Remember why you’re there in the first place, and stick to the stuff we love!

Howard’s set: (I know I am missing at least one song; I’m working from memory)
Everlasting Love (I need an e-e-ver-last-ing lo-ove), What is Love? (what is lo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ove any-way? Does anybody love anybody anyway?), Life in One Day, No One Is to Blame, New Song (Don’t crack up ...), Things Can Only Get Better. Note: He did not sing “Like to Get to Know You Well.”

Human League:
This gave me goosebumps. I agree with the other review on this bulletin board about their performance. It was just phenomenal. The images were all psychedelic and I truly felt like I was in the 80s. And those ladies had some cool dresses!!

“Don’t You Want Me” I cannot say enough about. It was mesmerizing. How surreal it was to hear both the guy and the girl singing their respective parts, and--I want to relive this--listening to “You better change it back or we will”--picture the audience punching the air above with both fists four times along to these words--”BOTH--BE--SOR--RY!” I almost cried when the song was over. I wanted them to sing it all over again.

“Fascination” was also incredible, tho I regret to say the sound wasn’t all that good and one of the singers, whenever it came around to her part, wasn’t all that audible.

And Culture Club, with the Boy:

Boy George is just a star. I’m not a super-intense fan like Lindsay, but I do like my Culture Club for nostalgic reasons if anything. But George proved to me just how well he can carry an audience, time and again. They opened with “Church of the Poison Mind” (apparently a standard opener) and closed with an encore of “Karma Chameleon”--then ANOTHER encore of “StarMan” by David Bowie. He also played “Everything I Own,” “The Crying Game,” and all their old hits plus a couple of new ones. (Yes, Lindsay, they played “I Just Wanna Be Loved.”) The only noticeable omission to me was “The War Song,” which I was a little bit bummed about.

George wore a black jacket and pants with a white shirt, as well as a god-awful hat as usual. During “Karma,” it occurred to me that the colors on his hat, from top to bottom, were indeed RED-GOLDEN-GREEN.

The female singer was awesome--as George said, “She’s big, she’s beautiful, and she sings like a diva!”

I know I’m not up on as much Culture Club info as some of you are, but I for one was shocked to discover the original Jon Moss on the drums, especially after the “Behind the Music” did-they-or-didn’t-they relationship denial issue. On VH-1 Moss appeared to be happily living in suburbia as a dad--that’s why I was stunned to see him onstage. But judging from his in person mannerisms, etc., I have to say, that man has got to be gay. He should just admit it--nobody cares anymore!

YEAH!
I am so glad someone else had the chance to see this great show and judging by your review had the same experience I had. I am jealous in a way because you got a few more songs than we did but it was opening night here and I think he was a bit nervous.
Lindsay you gotta go! You are the die-hard fan and if 2 of us went for more of the nostalgia sake you have to go for the STARSTRUCK FAN point of view.
Best of luck is sent your way Lindsay I hope you are able to make it,
Dan

I don't know if anyone can be the biggest fan of any star, but I come pretty damn close to it when it comes to my 'Boy.' Rosie O' Donnell has her thing for Tom Cruise and I have mine for Boy George. I adore his lyrics, songs, just him in general. Above all, from a fan's and musician's point of view, I respect him. I can honestly say, that in my life I have had the chance to see some of my fave stars in concert. But, with George it would be different. I compare it to George seeing Bowie for the first time. Here is someone you look up to and there they are, only feet from you. I am unable to get tickets cause, number one, I have a bad stomach prob that causes me to be unable to travel very far, though for him I would. Second, I have called for tickets and am getting nowhere. I wish they would come closer to me cause I don't think I will be able to handle it when the tour is over and I missed my chance. Seeing him would be the most emotional and best experience I would ever go through. I know ALL the songs by heart, I live by them. I am working on my web page dedicated to him and my other musical loves now. There are lots of people who are the same as me over their respective faves, I know.
But, the way it looks, seeing George in concert would be a miracle. I guess I will just have to live through everyone who posts their reviews here..........Thanks...

...my online friend Babs Bunny, aka Juli Magera. She and I share in common our Rhodieness (meaning we're huge fans of the keyboardist from Duran Duran, Nick Rhodes), but she is too a Georgiephile and CANNOT STOP talking about *her* Boy!!! I only know the URL of her Nick Rhodes site (because that's the thing she and I have in common), so you can go ahead and surf on over to visit her by going to the link listed to below. Hey...maybe we can also get you to adore my one true love, Nick Rhodes (the only two people who even come close are David Bowie and David Sylvian from Japan)...?!?! Hopefully...?

Lots of love.

Diane (that crazy Rhodie who wishes she were Mrs. Rhodes)

I thank you for recognizing my devotion! I have always been a fan and always will be. I know the hat you are speaking of cause he wore it on Letterman, sort of like a cowboy hat, but much more extravagant...???
I love anything that Boy George does! And, wears for that matter. He has his own style, poise, and self that make him unique. I love all the versions of 'I Just Wanna Be Loved' that I have heard. Yes, Church of the Poison Mind is a standard opener for the performances I have seen or heard of!
With Howard Jones, I think he is trying to recapture his fame that sort of left in the 80's.
He is such a great singer and performer. He has the money to prove it, so he can strutt around.
I want to be known for my singing, cause it is my career....I would do the same if I were him.
Although we differ alot in our opinions, I thank you for noticing my devotion to George. To me, he is priceless. I would love to see the Rewind Tour because I would appreciate it..That is all I have to say. I wouldn't degrade it bit by bit.
Sorry, Lindsay

Subject: SOOO CLOSE, YET SO FAR

My mother is a big CC fan as I am-I got her hooked when I was little! So, I talked to her and she said she would love to go to the Nashville show cause that is the closest to us, and I was willing to bear the trip! I thought the Nashville show was on the 18th of September and was ecstatic! Here is my chance! Then, after getting all excited, I see that it is August 18th, not a weekend and Mom nor Dad can get off work! UGH! I am so upset....:( I want to at least get a concert shirt! Why is this happening to me? My friends won't got with me cause they don' t like him-damn them! HELP!
