If it was "I was standing in the corner of a cocktail bar...", then it was "Don't You Want Me" by Human League.

Sounds to me like it might be "Tom's Diner" by DNA featuring Suzanne Vega. It was remixed by DNA but was already on a Suzanne Vega album minus the beats. If the song talks about sitting at a diner on the corner and the experiences she sees, than that one is it.
