Subject: A Question About the International Lyrics Server
I went to the site the other day and it says that they are joining forces with songfile.com. When I type in the address, it says that you need a username and a password to get in. How are you supposed to go on there and look for lyrics in the future when most people probably can't even get past the username part?

I came across the same problem, Juli. You can't even search for songs on the ILS or check out their links. What's up with that?
Inquiring minds want to know.

The ILS doesn't have an e-mail anymore.

It is my understanding that a group of music publishers with copyright interests in many of the songs on the ILS sued to successfully close the site down due to apparent violations of the international copyright laws regarding song lyrics. Technically, putting lyrics up on the Internet without asking the writer's or publisher's permission first is illegal, which is why the ILS is so difficult to access now. Impossible even.

What can we do about it?

there's nothing you can do about it... however, from what I read in the New York Times, they do have permision with the music publisher's association to put the site back up, the message now says it will return on more powerful servers.. from what I know about it, the music publishers association wanted to do something similar, wanted to shut down the lyrics server, and wanted their database on top of it.. since it is in a foreign country, the copyright laws are a little different than the US, so maybe both sides caved a little... I was able to do a lyrics search there about a week ago, (though no banners at the top of the pages, which was the music publishers biggest complaint) so I think they will be back...

I've read about five or six e-mails re: International Lyric Server but no one seems to leave the address. Even though it might not work, can someone at least give me the web address or any web page with song lyrics and titles? Thanks in advance.

David,
Try . Cd93 is an on-line radio station, but also has a pretty comprehensive lyrics search, among other things. Just click on "Song Search" button in the frame to the left, and you can then search by artist or song. It isn't as comprehensive as International Lyrics, but until they are back up and running it might suffice. Good luck! Cheryl-
