Subject: 1989

Written By: Guest on 04/13/04 at 10:51 a.m.

I know a lot of people don't like this year for some reason and many don't think of it as being part of the "real 80's", but I personally like it a lot and have a lot of really cool memories from that year.  Maybe the reason I look back on 1989 so fondly is because I was born in 1983 and that is the one year from the 80's that I can remember quite a bit from, especially when it comes to music and TV. In my opinion, 1989 was one of the best years for movies with Batman, Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, Lethal Weapon II, Back To The Future II, Born On The Fouth Of July, Ghostbusters II, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and Heathers.  You also had some good music like "Me, Myself, and I" by De La Soul, "Sowing The Seeds Of Love" by Tears For Fears, "She Drives Me Crazy" by Fine Young Cannibals, "Dr. Feelgood" by Motley Crue, and one that I remember liking "We Didn't Start The Fire" by Billy Joel.  Here's some other cool things that I can remember from 1989, some of which didn't actually come out that year but what I can mostly remember from it:

Ducktales
Berinstain Bears books
Doogie Howser
Muppet Babies
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Nintendo
Gameboy
The Land Before Time I
First episode of The Simpsons
Alf
The Cosby Show
Batman
Going for Halloween as the Joker
Honey, I Shrunk The Kids
Getting Ninja Turtles action figure for X-Mas
Honey, I Shrunk The Kids cups at McDonalds
Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers
Nick J.R. (David the Gnome, Eureka's Catle era, etc.)
"We Didn't Start The Fire" by Billy Joel

All together a good year I would say, maybe not the most defining year of the 80's like say '84-'85.  Maybe if I had been born earlier and could remember those core years of the 80's better my opinion would be different, but I still say 1989 rocks! ;)

Well I enjoyed 89 too. I think it had a lot of good things happen in it. 89 was smack dab in the middle of my high school years and so alot of it was pivotal to me. I love all of the 80's years, they all had things special about them for me, even 89.  :)

I didn't realise a lot of people didn't like this year. IMO I always thought the 80s ended after 1990. 1989 was as 80s as the other 8 years before that.

I like that year for a lot of the reasons you mentioned as well 'guest'. Honey I shrunk the Kids, Back to the Future II and Ghostbusters II are excellent films.

You can think whatever you want, but after 1989 we stopped saying "nineteen eighty..." for the year and started saying "nineteen ninety...", hence the names "80s" and "90s".

Anyway, I was in elementary school at the time.

I had a blast in 1989.The music scene I was into(Glam metal) was really happening.I was out every week seeing bands and writting for a local music paper.I also went backpacking around America for two months with my best friend and we had the best time.I have very fond memories of the year.

I have nothing but good memories of 1989, capped by graduating from high school and going away to college - a period during which I began an entirely new realm of my life. Not to mention that I also met one of my best friends in '89.

During the first half of that year I was in 3rd grade (the school year ended on June 8th!) and during the second half I was in 4th grade--- at a different school!

I got my first camera for my birthday that year, so I began to enjoy taking pictures.;D

I will share more memories later.

It's a personal thing, joe. We had a thread a while back that asked us when you personally felt the 80s culture ended and the 90s begun as we all feel it in different ways. I kind of followed on from that without explanation.

Okay. But culture is one thing, time is another.

I was gonna say, many great TV programs that were on mostly in the 90s premiered in the year 1989: "The Simpsons" (which is still on today; it actually premiered two years earlier as part of the Tracy Ullman show, but the Simpsons began their own series in '89), "Saved By The Bell", "Family Matters", "Seinfeld", etc.

You feel about 1989, the way I feel about the years 1975-1978.  There's a time in childhood when you become aware of pop culture and current events.  Your understanding is so limited at ages six through nine that there's a kind of magical allure in your newfound connection.
My oldest sister, born in 1963, has always been enamored with the the late '60s and early '70s.

1989 was a transistional year for me. I was ending one life and beginning anew. I can't say it was good, I can't say it was bad. It was deffinately better than 1988 (the worse year of my life) but life deffinately got better for me in the 90s. I spent the most of year in Greece.

The fall of 1989 is especially memorible to me. 燭hat fall I started elementry school and got to use a computer for the first time in my class for typing. 燭he computer I used was an old school 80's computer, quite primitive to the ones we have now I must say. 營 can remember coming home from school and watching cartoons like Ducktales, Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers, Super Mario Bros., Zelda, Ghostbusters, and shows like Alf and The Cosby Show. 營 hung out with my cousin a lot around that time and we usually played Nintendo games at his house like Tetris and Mario. 燜or Halloween I went as the Joker after seeing Batman and for Christmas I got Ninja Trtles action figures and remember seeing previews for their movie, which I later saw when it came out in the spring of 1990. 營 also remember being into books like Berinstein Bears and Where's Waldo. It was also during that year that two of my main talents and interests began to emerge, drawing and photography.

All together 1989 was the first good year for me. 1990 was also good and was similar to '89 and the two could go together for me. 1991 was when things started to change with my family and I moving and the pop culture changing over as well. 燘y the end of that year the actual 90's had begun for me which were from late '91 to early '98.

If it makes you feel any better, I think I would have enjoyed growing up in the 70s or 80s rather than today. :)

1989 was an amazing year for me. My life went through so many dramatic changes (for the better) and I haven't had a year that's even come close since then. Let's see: My first nephew was born (actually November 1988, but that's close enough), my first niece was born, I lost my virginity, I got busted for minor-in-possession with a large number of my classmates (but had a lot of fun nonetheless), I graduated high school, I joined the Army, completed basic training and AIT (Advanced Individual Training); I watched in amazement as the eastern European communist regimes fell one by one, climaxing with the fall of the Berlin Wall; I won my first fight, and I shipped out for duty in (then West) Germany. '89 was a hell of a year for me and I know I'll probably never have another one like it.

These things both happened to me in 1988, May and March, respectively.  However, I was on my own for the "possession" rap, and it wasn't alcohol.  It was green, leafy stuff.  :-X
