Subject: Who loves The Smurfs?

Written By: eightiesfan on 04/12/04 at 10:29 a.m.

I used to love watching The Smurfs every Saturday morning in my pre-teens. It was also funny to see Gargamel and Azriel trying to catch the Smurfs because you knew they would be foiled every time.  :D

I had a Smurf piggy bank when I was in the 5th or 6th grade and now I have Smurfs wallpaper on my computer screen which I found over at Google.

I wouldn't say love, but I watched them. I found that Azriel was a great name for a cat which lived in a castle, but it sounds foreign and pretentious for me to consider using it on future kids as it's NOT exactly the "girl next door" vibe.
Anyhow, as you were older than me at the time you probably remember more, but I probably had more of the serialized toys. I remember having a purse and I was upset when we left home early Saturdays and we could not watch the show. I also had a resin figure of the Smurfette and one o the boys sitting close together on a log exchanging flowers, and their initials were carved into the back of the log. I bought it cheap, and almost immediately something happened and Smurfette fell off the log but she herself did not break.  Meaning of course that it is now cracked under her seat, but it fits together well.
I always like the adventures that involve mother nature.  ;D

Did you know that Azriel the cat was actually a girl cat?  All these years I thought it was a boy. I just found this out over at this website called www.80 Children.com which gives descriptions of some of the Smurf characters.

I did!!  It was my favorite..
Now I have a 2 year old son and I want him to watch them but of course you can't find smurf dvd's anywhere.  I bought one off Ebay and it was homemade and not that great and it didnt even have Smurfette!!

I am hoping they will come out with the Smurfs dvd's and Alvin and the chipmunks too!  Especially since they are coming out with a JEM dvd and some other old cartoons.

My first encounter with the smurfs was Befor american television ever discovered them.

I was with my family on vatation in Gatlinburg Tenn(either 1979 or 1980). and I saw these toys of kewl little blue creatures and their mushroom shaped houses. I spent most of my vacation money on these toys. there were also some books with the characters but I couldnt understand the language they were in so I wasnt interested in them. (really wish I had bought them now. hehe.)

it was a couple of years later that I noticed the tv show with all the smurfs which I had toys of. it was kind of fun to show off that I already had all these toys of a show that just started.

I didnt become a collector or anything, and eventually the toys I had either got lost, or sold in garage sales or something. and today I dont have any of them.  I do have a video tape I found in a flea market. And I still like the Smurfs and my two daughters enjoy watching the video from time to time.

Thats one of the kewl things about them. they are timeless.

I was just over on EBay now bidding on a plush Smurf from 1981 that looked SO cute - I also noticed that someone is selling a VHS copy of a Smurfs show from 1989.
