Subject: Mayor of the Sunset Strip

A movie is opening in limited (art house) release this week called "Mayor of the Sunset Strip," chronicling the life of Rodney Bingenheimer, a legendary DJ at The World Famous KROQ in Los Angeles.
I used to listen to the Rodney on the Roq show during KROQ's glory days (1980 to 1985), and while he didn't have much of a radio voice, he really knew how to pick music. These days, radio stations (other than college radio) are heavily programmed. Someone someplace decides what to play when, and the DJs follow their orders. Back then, radio was coming out of the free form era and DJs still found and played new music on their own. Rodney broke acts like The Ramones, X, Blondie, The Smiths and later on, Oasis, Blur and Hole.
KROQ set the standard that all American new wave/modern rock stations followed, and Rodney was a big part of that legacy. Corporate, consolidated radio today sucks by comparison. The movie just finished the festival tour (playing to standing room only crowds in LA) and is opening on the art house circuit this coming Friday, April 9. Check your papers to see if it's playing near you and check it out.
