Subject: Country Music of the 80's

Even though a lot of people might think country music isn't cool, is there at least one song or artist from that genre that you're a closet fan of?  Here are some of my picks:

Dolly Parton - 9 to 5 (the movie is pretty good too)
The Judds - Why Not Me and Grampa Tell Me Bout the Good Old Days
Restless Heart - I'll Still Be Loving You
Garth Brooks - If Tomorrow Never Comes
Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton - Islands in the Stream
Alabama - The Closer You Get

Country music is good in small doses.  Some of my favorite 80s country songs are...

Take Me Down - Alabama
I Love A Rainy Night - Eddie Rabbit
Looking For Love - Johnny Lee
Let Me Love You Tonight - Pure Prairie League (lead by a very young Vince Gill)
Swingin' - John Anderson
When You Say Nothing At All - Keith Whitley
Ocean Front Property - George Strait

I meant to put that one down - every time I remember that song I think about the movie that it's from Urban Cowboy (which I still haven't seen but plan to next time I get the chance).

I'm not too much of a country music fan, but I do like some tunes I've heard over the years. Memory being fuzzy and all, one of the tunes I list may be 70's. Then again, maybe not. ;D

Anyway, these are my faves:

Eddie Rabbit - Someone Could Lose A Heart
Randy Travis - Deeper Than The Holler, I told You So
Alabama - Song Of The South

That's a rock song - southern rock, but definitely not country.  Hank Williams, Jr. remade it, but the Georgia Satellites version, though kind of leaning towards country is a little too much for most country radio stations.  :)

There was very little country music in the 80's that I liked. However my favorite country song from then was 'Highwayman - Highwayman' in 1985. This group of course included Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson.

Believe it or not, Lionel Richie had a strong connection to country music in the 80's - his 1984 single "Stuck on You" went to #1 on the pop, r & b, and country charts. He also did a duet with Alabama called "Deep River Woman" and he wrote the song "Lady" which was a #1 for Kenny Rogers.

Woah! I didn't realize "Stuck On You" also hit the country charts! For him in the 80's it seemed everything he touched turned to gold!

Another country song I like from the 80's is "All My Exes Live in Texas" by George Strait.
