I seem to remember it was around $10 for a new release LP and $1.59 for a single but it changed so much with the advent and death of cassettes and then CDs.

I seem to remember records costing maybe $7.95, and there were stores where you could rent them for $2.00-$3.00 per week. Cassettes were maybe $5.95 and up, don't recall any used ones in the mid 80s, but tons of used albums were available.

I bought a LOT of music in the 80s. I remember 45s being about 99 cents in the early 80s and going up to about $1.29 in the mid 80s. Then cassette singles came along and they were about $1.49-$1.79.
LPs and cassettes ran about $7.99 for most of the 80s. There were 2 rival discounters in my area, Buzzard's Nest and RTO (Record & Tape Outlet). They both sold most of their LPs and cassettes for $5.99 for years. That's where I bought most of my stuff! :)

The biggest scam in recorded music history is the way CD prices never came down to the level LPs had been when they were phased out in the late '80s.
I used to pay $6.99-$9.99 for cassettes, and $7.99-$11.99 for LPs, depending.
A lot of stores had the top selling CDs on sale for under $12.00, but these usually weren't the ones I wanted to buy.
Anyway, the RIAA 'fessed up to the overcharging recently. They decided that any consumer who had bought CDs in the past ten years was entitled to a free one. I think you can go to some RIAA website and fill out a mile of paperwork, and they send you some coupon for $20.00. I think there's a catch somewhere, and, anyway, I wouldn't touch anything from the RIAA with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole!
