He became a soap star to further boost his career but was already a star in his own right/successful musician.

So that technically disqualifies him from this thread. 8)

That's gotta be a good thing, whitewolf. :)

Kelsey Grammar was on Another World in the early 80's before he became one of TV's favorite psychiatrists, Frasier Crane.

Another Cheers alum, Ted Danson, was on a soap called The Doctors.

Who's the Boss star Judith Light played prostitute Karen Wolek on One Life to Live.

David Hasselhoff of Knight Rider and Baywatch fame played Snapper on Young and the Restless.

Ray Liotta started on "Another World" in 1978.  He also had a few TV roles, including a stint on the short-lived series "Casablanca" before landing his first big movie role as "Ray Sinclaire" in Jonathan Demme's Something Wild (1986).

Hairspray, I hate to disagree with you, but his music career was virtually non-existent before he was on General Hospital.  So a " already a star in his own right/successful musician" is probably a stretch.  Not until he was on GH did anyone know who he was let alone any of his songs.  But when "Jessie's Girl" hit and the 45 sleeve said "Dr. Noah Drake from General Hospital" did anyone pay any attention to him.  had it not been for his career in soaps, we still might be calling him "Bruce."   :)

Um errrr  NOT !!  Rick was already an established recording star of the late 60s and early 70s IN HIS OWN COUNTRY.  Just because you had not heard of him does not mean he was "virtually non existent".
Like many Aussies he took off overseas to further his career in another country having achieved enough success in Aus.

In order to get noticed by a far larger population he used his looks to get a soap role and that brought him to the US publics attention.

Its pretty darn rude to assume that just because someone is unknown in the US - then they are unknown in their own country.

Can I just add that Mel Gibson also got started in Aus soaps in the 70's.  I have some seriously old video clips of him on The Restless Years and boy was he skinny.

Easy!  Go eat a vegamite sandwich or something!   :-/  True, he did not start his career in soaps, but he owes most of his success to General Hospital.  He became a soap star because his music career was going nowhere - therefore his soap career MADE him a star and a household name.  And after he conquered the U.S., the rest of the world took notice.

It's fine that he had some success in Australia, but that's like being a regional star in the U.S.  The biggest markets, the U.S. and the U.K. didn't know who he was.  Until they did, his career was stalled.  In retrospect, joining the cast of GH was the best career move he could have ever made.

Springfield did have a minor hit in the US in the early 70's called "Speak to the Sky" - he enjoyed a brief stint in the teen idol magazines of the time alongside David Cassidy and Donny Osmond when he had a short-lived Saturday morning cartoon series.

Married with Children star Christina Applegate appeared on Days of Our Lives when she was just an infant; Amy Yasbeck (wife of the late John Ritter) also had a brief stint on that show from 1986-87.

Luke Perry of 90210 fame was on Loving and his co-stars Ian Ziering and Gabrielle Carteris were on Guiding Light and Another World, respectively.

Did anybody actually see his 1984 movie Hard To Hold?  There was sort of a Rick mania in 1983, he had a couple of big hits, "Affair of the Heart," and "Human Touch."  Neither was quite as big as "Jesse's Girl," but I think Rick himself was at his popular peak.  There was even a Rick info line, something like 1-800-555-RICK, though, Casey Kasem cautioned, you won't actually get to speak to Rick himself. ::) Anyway, Hard to Hold was his big screen debut, though its cool reception was rather anti-climactic.  I didn't see it, I wasn't too big on the Rickster.

Did you know that Rick Springfield dated Exorcist star Linda Blair back in the 70's? I heard they just sort of grew apart after they had been together for a couple of years.  :'(

Gonna try not to mention ones that were already mentioned.

One Life To Live-Tommy Lee Jones, Roma Downey, Al Freeman, Jr. Joe Lando

General Hospital-Amber Tamblyn, Rena Sofer

(Those are the only two that I watch)

I know Kathleen Turner was on one but don't know which one.

That is all I can think of right now.

A lot of people were on "The Doctors," but a lot of people were on a lot of serials!
Per IMDB, Kathleen Turner was "Nola Dancy Aldrich" in the late '70s.  Alec Baldwin was on "The Doctors" in the early '80s, Ellen Burstyn in the mid-'60s, and folk singer Judy Collins did a stint on the show in the the early '80s as a character named "Judith Howard," coincidentally my mother's maiden name!

Sigh.   ::)  To correct you I risk insulting each and every American on this site and I dont wish to do that as I consider them my friends.

But what it comes down to is this.  The United States of America is NOT the be all and end all of the world Stingr - despite your obvious wish that it be thought of as such.

Plenty of actors and singers have extremely successful careers in their own countrys and other countries around the world without ever having to move or break into to the US.

Do not insult our artists by insinuating (well you didnt insinuate - you actually said it) that being a well known performer in their own country is the equivalent of being a "regional" star in the US.

The biggest selling artist in the UK, Aus, NZ, Europe and Asia is NOT an American.  He is from the UK and has managed to have a 42 year career, outselling Elvis, Beatles and Sinatra in all those countries and has had number 1 singles and albums in every decade since the 50's.  He has toured every two years to sell out stadiums in all those countrys.  He doesnt "need" the US for his career.  And nor do many others.

But as he was never a soap star he is not relevant to this discussion thread.  I am just using him as an example.
