Subject: Early Childhood Years are the Happiest
I was born in 1983, in Scottsdale, Arizona. From the time period of 1983 to 1989, my memories are vague. From the various snippets that are more clear to me, I can piece together what my life was like during the upper-half of the decade. At what age are children able to form memories? My guess is as soon as we learn to walk, during the terrible twos. This is a pivotal age when we start to become aware of the enviroment around us. Curiosity and innocence is why the early childhood years are the happiest of our lives. We discover good music for the first time. I could sing along to Wham and Cyndi Lauper. My sister, who is three years older, had a passion for "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", while I apparently had a fix for "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go". I count myself lucky that my parents were young and had good taste in music. My mom's tape collection was large and varied, ranging from Phil Collins to Mike and the Mechanics. Radio stations replayed all the hits from the decade, and didn't change their formats and song lists until the early nineties ushered in alternative rock. I remember when Michael Jackson was still cool. "Thriller" was before me, but "Bad" and then "Dangerous" turned a lot of kids into Jacko fans. My second video game system, after nintendo, was the sega genesis. I remember the day like it was yesterday. My dad took me to a Flea Market and I had a tough choice to make. I had to choose between the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo, both which were very young, and I went with Sega. I could choose two games, so I chose the original "Sonic the Hedgehog" and a game called "Michael Jackson's Moonwalker". It might have been a few years later, and all the kids were talking about Michael and the ugly M word "molestation". It went downhill from then on, and Jacko got weirder and weirder, and never mattered again.
The downfall of two artists, Jackson and Pee Wee Herman, probably signalled the final breathes of the eighties. If you were a child in the eighties you watched "Pee Wee's Playhouse". My parents took me to see "Big Top Pee Wee" in the theater and I remember it was a magical experiece.
I'm now going to film school. I have always had a love for movies. These films started my lifelong passion for cinema: The Short Circuit Films, Ghostbusters 1 and 2, Coccoon and it's sequel, Three Men and A Baby, Big, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Beetlejuice, Little Monsters, An American Tail, Eighteen Again, Can't Buy Me Love, the Land Before Time, Neverending Story 1 and 2, Batteries Not Included, Follow that Bird, the Care Bears Movie, the Chipmunk Adventure, etc. There is a large emphasis on childrens' movies but I was a child, and the quality of the childrens' films back then were top rate. Look at the mindless garbage they churn out nowadays. Compare it to a film like "All Dogs Go to Heaven", or "An American Tail", with it's oscar nominated song "Somewhere Out There".
Telivision wasn't a major step down either: Dumbo's Circus, He Man, the Gummi Bears, Teddy Ruxpin, Pound Puppies, Duck Tales, You Can't Do That on Telivision, etc.

I feel the same way as you do.
I am writing a childrens series called Crazy Tree. It is about sprite and me as a ten year old child and the adventures I would have with them. Although I was 5 in 1988, I write about me being ten and the adventures me and the sprites have. I really hope to make it as a writer. I don't care if it gets published I want to sell it independantly.
I am working on two books now and have covered good ground. I still need to get used to manuscripts as I mostly enjoy thinking about the stuff.
You whould write me we could be email pals.

Plus the 80's had a certain magic, charm, and charisma to it that the 90's and 2000's never had.
Even if you were older then 4 or 5 in 1987, you could still feel the magic back in those days.

I guess you could say they were but we all have to grow up someday! :D

I'm young at heart, Howard. I'm nearly 25 and I still have my old WWF wrestling figures and the ring! I still have a play with them when I need to release some aggression. I love renacting my own Royal Rumble. :)

Yeah early childhood was cool. Riding Bikes outside with friends, sitting down and watching TV shows. Most of my childhood was spent watching late 70's/80's TV shows. Thats what most of my childhood was about. I don't regret any minute of it. The early to mid 90's had magic to it as well. The 00's has nothing on the 90's or 80's in my opinion.

Fair enough. Did you have one of those Teddy Ruxpin things where you stuck a cassette into him and he would 'talk' to you? My cousin had one of those and I thought it was amazing.
I never needed teddy bears and things like that. I had a Paddington Bear once but that was when I was very little.
Now wrestling figures, that's a different matter . . . ;D

I grew up in the 60's... the ULTIMATE decade.
My favorite toys were the Wham-O Air Blaster, the Wham-O Super Ball, and the Wham-O Frisbee.
I still have the Frisbee and the Air Blaster. ;D
Subject: Re: Early Childhood Years are the Happiest
I couldn't agree more with this post. My childhood was the best time of my life, and there was definitely a certain magic to the 80's. The 90's were ok and the 00's suck. I guess that's because we're all adults now and life is different. If we were adults in the 80's, we'd probably say that the 60's were awesome...and the children who are born now will be going to a website 20 years from now called "inthe00s.com" saying 2004 was a magical time. It's all about how you perceive things, but there will always be a very special place in my heart and memory for the 80's and my childhood, and an unfulfilled desire to go back and relive it, if only for a moment. I miss it so much, guess that's why I'm here.

I spent the most part of my early childhood in the 80s, and I remember enough loving every moment of it. And who wouldn't be happy, there were all those fun toys to play with ;D

Do you still watch wrestling on t.v.? My boyfriend is 35 and still watches it every week. Uhhhhhhhhhh, I hate it. Shouldn't he have grown out of it by now? Or am I just being mean?

Ohhhh, I loved my easy bake oven. I would spend hours coming up with my own receipes. This was like my favorite thing to do. WHY now, that I am older and have a *real oven* to bake in, it's just not as fun anymore. Now I hate to cook (he he)

When I was a kid in the 60's, wrestling was known as "Studio Wrestling" and was broadcast/produced by local stations instead of the national syndicated stuff these days.
In Pittsburgh, "Studio Wrestling" came on every saturday, hosted by legendary horror-movie host Bill Cardille (who was also known as "Chilly Billy" when he hosted Chiller Theatre).
A local heating & air conditioning company sponsored the show, and their spokesman was Baseball Hall-of-Famer Pie Traynor, who was old as dirt... probably in his late 80's at the time. ;)
In the 1960's, by far the best wrestler was 12-year-WWF-champion Bruno Sammartino. They also ran tag-team matches, and the best tag-team was The Sicilians, managed by "Captain" Lou Albano. :o Other big names were George "The Animal" Steele, Killer Kowalski, Gorilla Monsoon, Dominic Denucci (and his "airplane spin" maneuver), Haystack Calhoun, Hans Holzer
Boy, wrestling was more simple (and fun) in those days. 8)
And yet... Bruno Sammartino has yet to be inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame. That's a crime. >:(
Subject: Re: Early Childhood Years are the Happiest
I don't want childhood to be the happiest years, because mine wasn't happy. And anyway, if you live a long life and childhood is happiest, then for seven decades more it's all down hill!
I want the last ten years of my life to the happiest. I want to be a senile, happy old coot, like Ronald Reagan!
Subject: Re: Early Childhood Years are the Happiest
My early childhood was in the late 80s-early 90s, and yes I would agree that is the happiest time of your life. Everything was fun then.

Ah you're being too mean, Juicyfruit lol. I tend not to watch WWE Raw/Smackdown these days as it just bores me but I watch the PPVs when I can and a new channel that has come to SKY called TWC (The Wrestling Channel). It's brilliant because it shows American, Japanese, British and Mexican wrestling - now I know there is a God. :D

I wish I saw those guys wrestle, Lyricboy. It would be funny watching Gorilla Monsoon wrestle only knowing him to be a commentator in his WWE days.
I can't believe Bruno Sammartino isn't in the WWF Hall of Fame. As much as I didn't like his comeback, I think Bob Backlund should have been inducted as well - he held the WWF title 3 years running!

Last time I saw him, it was Royal Rumble 2000 as a special guest in the 30 man battle royal.
Backlund is probably a typical example of WWF messing around with a wrestler. He held a lot of promise, despite his age, lasting about the longest anybody had in a Royal Rumble at that time.
Before you know it, he was embarrassed at Wrestlemania 9 by Razor Ramon (a perfect example of unintentional humour, downright embarrassing to watch). He lasted about a minute at Royal Rumble 1994 (a contrast to the year previously) and then they put him in a feud for the title with Bret 'The Hitman' Hart for reasons only known to the WWF. He won no major matches to get the title shot! To add insult to injury, Backlund won the title and then he jobbed to Diesel by getting pinned in less than a minute!

Okay, maybe your right. It just all seems the same to me after about 10 minutes. It cracks me up sometimes with how fake some of the matches are, that I have to leave the room when my boyfriend is watching it, so I don't ruin it for him. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not saying theses guys and gals aren't talented at what they do, it just gets old after awhile for me.
