Subject: Dance-Pop, Hip-Hop, House, Techno... From Disco?

Written By: Hairspray on 03/16/04 at 11:53 a.m.

Dance-Pop, Hip-Hop, House, Techno were born from Disco! 8)

I remember thinking a decade ago "House is the forefather of Techno". I hadn't thought far back enough to realize Disco never really died; It just mutated into much of the stuff we listened to in the 1980's and even a lot of what many people listen to today.

Disco marked the dawn of dance-based popular music. Growing out of the increasingly groove-oriented sound of early '70s and funk, disco emphasized the beat above anything else, even the singer and the song. Disco was named after discotheques, clubs that played nothing but music for dancing. Most of the discotheques were gay clubs in New York, and the DJs in these clubs specifically picked soul and funk records that had a strong, heavy groove. After being played in the disco, the records began receiving radio play and respectable sales. Soon, record companies and producers were cutting records created specifically for discos. Naturally, these records also had strong pop hooks, so they could have crossover success. Disco albums frequently didn't have many tracks — they had a handful of long songs that kept the beat going. Similarly, the singles were issued on 12-inch records, which allowed for extended remixes. DJs could mix these tracks together, matching the beats on each song since they were marked with how fast they were in terms of beats per minute. In no time, the insistent, pounding disco beat dominated the pop chart, and everyone cut a disco record, from rockers like the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart to pop acts like the Bee Gees and new wave artists like Blondie. There were disco artists that became stars — Donna Summer, Chic, the Village People, and KC & the Sunshine Band were brand names — but the music was primarily a producer's medium, since they created the tracks and wrote the songs. Disco lost momentum as the '70s became the '80s, but it didn't die — it mutated into a variety of different dance-based genres, ranging from dance-pop and hip-hop to house and techno.

I've thought that too. I can really hear it in Debbie Deb's stuff. I think music is ever evolving.
Did you write that essay? or did you get it from somewhere else?

I just so happen to be listening to my "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack right now! The Bee Gees were so good. I always thought disco got an undeserved bad-rap at the onset of the 80's. I am in full agreement that the modern music scene is constantly changing, hence the term "modern". Disco got it's origins from 50's-60's rock and roll/Motown/funk and so on. It seems each decade has to have it's own name to what is essentially modern popular music. I like to consider myself as a frequent patron of the all-you-can-eat buffet of music genres. Not much out there I won't listen to, or at least tolerate for a while. An interesting topic, I enjoyed reading some of the replies. Thanks. Later.  8)

I didn't really think about it much then, but definitely there is/was alot of disco influence even in the '80s.  I guess it's the unacknowledged secret.  (Altho I'm not sure I'd want to tie it in much w/hip-hop/rap!)

Very obvious connection to me - albeit not at 1st blush "disco" - Madonna's break-in album.  The hits from there are so obviously disco-compatible it's not funny!

Then of course there was Donna Summer making a hit here or there obviously disco-like if not blatantly so, and Rick Astley breaking in w/what can only be called disco.

To me the diff is mainly what the musical arrangement is.  Disco liked alot of strings and more orchestral backgrounds; '80s dance liked alot of purely electronic sounds.  Change the "instrument" and you probably can't tell much difference.

But while there's all this talk of a constant "pounding" beat - I think disco sounds smoother than that.  Yes it's there, and obvious, but often it seems smoothed over by other music whereas most dance stuff seems more concatenated and broken up.

Well anyway this is all my take on it!   :)

OK, and since you were so nice to write out everything, I'll waste some more time and show you what I agree on.....(or at least, that I know!)

The criteria here are:
-I have to know them
-I have to know at least quite a few hits (maybe >5?) or songs generally (usually I only know hits, and I won't go on 1 or 2 songs cuz what if I find out I hate the other things they do?!)
-I have to like most of *those* songs quite alot or all of them pretty well!

So if it's off this list, it could be any 1 of those reasons, not cuz I really hate them.  In fact some here are borderline, usually bordering on the "boredom" dept.....as opposed to "I really love them!

Donna Summer, Foreigner, David Bowie, Queen, The Beatles, The Monkees, The Everly Brothers, The Mamas and the Papas, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, The Platters, The Andrews Sisiters, Earth Wind & Fire, Bee Gees, Kenny Rogers, Peaches & Herb, Steve Miller Band, Duran Duran, Madonna, Blondie, The Human League, Air Supply, Genesis, The Police, Chicago, Michael Jackson (until the late 80's), The Cars, Boy George & Culture Club, Bruce Springsteen, Christopher Cross, Debbie Gibson, Joe Jackson, Eddie Rabbit, Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, New Edition, The Commodores, Sade, Whitney Houston (any!), Olivia Newton-John, Billy Joel, Simon & Garfunkel, the Four Seasons, The Four Tops, Tavares

No Madonna?  To which I would add (the original '80s queen version only).

Oh yeah, Madonna. One of the very many I left out of the list due to loss of energy. ;D I liked her stuff up to the very early 1990's but much prefer her 1980's persona and hits. 8)

I'm not sure whether I understand Hip-hop to come from Disco. I always thought it was a mutation of rap and r&b. I don't know whether House was a form or mutation of Disco either . . .

I agree that Disco never died. In the 80s, Stock Aitken Waterman (the men that gave us Rick Astley, Sinitta, Dead or Alive . . .) produced, what I can only describe, as Disco hits. In fact, I heard that their style was referred to as 'Gay Disco'.

IMO I think Kylie Minogue's 'I'm spinning around' gave original Disco a comeback. There have been lots of female groups that have followed with Disco hits (and cover versions) since.

BTW, I checked your list, Hairspray and I think it's excellent. Especially choices like Dan Hartman, Human League, Culture Club, The Cars, Thompson Twins, Four Seasons (with that excellent remix of 'Oh what a night') and Billy Joel.

I went to a nightclub where metallers were headbanging and stuff. Fortunately, I didn't get moshed around a lot!

Dancing was pretty difficult in there because there was spilt beer all over the floor.

Also I felt very much out of place.  ::)
